| I recently got a Visa Check Card. Will my Visa Check Card be accepted where ever I see the Visa symbol? Thanks |
-Most- of them won't. The bigger names like Hertz and Avis won't take them. Some Dollar locations take them and some don't. Enterprise is usually good about using them. They handle it differently though because they will actually bill your card, not just run an authorization, and then when you return the vehicle they'll make a debit or credit to your account to settle things up. |

A while back there was a gent here that had a false charge of $2000 for a computer put on his card. So $2,000 was pulled from his checking account, causing overdraft issues with other checks. He got the money put back, then a couple weeks later the charges reappeared, causing more overdraft problems. The store had a receipt showing it was a valid charge (it wasn't, it was fraud) My point - do you really want to tie your personal account in? You can easily end up with a real mess. I prefer credit cards, the worst that can happen is you hit your limit and the card doesn't work. |
Dont do it. Get a CC for online purchases even if its a prepaid one. Then use the check card to pay off the CC. |
|
If someone steals your credit card number and runs up the balance, then by law, you are only liable for the first $50 at most. If someone steals your check-card and your PIN and empties your bank acount, you are SOL, unless your bank has a fraud policy. But they are not required to have one. I only use my check card as an ATM card. I NEVER make purchases with it. |
| avoid the check card, use a CC and pay off the monthly balance each month. Check cards can lead to your checking account looted and you dont have the same rights of dispute as you do with a CC. With a CC you dispute $ you charged, with a check card you dispute to get your money back. |

Even if you have protection using a check card, you still have the problem with your checking account being emptied. I just had to close a CC due to fraudulent charges. We caught it pretty quickly luckily, but had it been a check card I could have found my account drained and my mortgage check bouncing. |
No I am most protected using a check card that is tied to an account that is only used for online transactions, only has money deposited into it when I'm planning to make a purchase online and is at a completely different bank than the one that actually has any money in it. |
BEWARE they do not offer you the same protection as a real CC. There is no reason to use one instead of a regular CC. If you like paying off your bills I hear ya...GET AMEX and be done with it. |
You guys are missing the point - EVEN if you have protection, that only covers the loss. You still have to deal with your checking account getting emptied, and the impact that has on checks you've written |
I've never had a problem, although they usually have a policy similar to the car rental companies where they actually bill the card then settle it up when you check out. |
Actually, they only hold you responsible for up to $150. Also, my earlier post.

Ever need to dispute a charge on an ATM/Check card? We do not have one, but friends have had to and it was a real pain in the ‘behind’. We have 3 CC’s, one for online use, one for Household use, and one for Automotive. If it costs more then $20.00, it goes on the card. Charge disputes are easy, and do not tie up OUR money while being resolved. (Unlike an ATM/Check card) People on here rant on how Credit Cards are ‘Evil’, it is not the card, but the USER that has the problem. We do not carry a balance, have never paid interest, and average 60k + a year in charges. Just takes discipline. |

Some fuckstick in Virginia somehow got my Check Card info and ordered some $30 music CD just about two weeks ago. And I've only used the stupid thing on the Net 2 or 3 times. I got my money back in less than a week (the company this person ordered from refunded my money with no trouble so it was very quick) but it's a very bad feeling to have money ripped straight out of your account. As mentioned with a credit card you simply dispute the charge and no skin off your back, trying to get your money BACK that's already been taken through fraud is a lot different. I believe I got extremely lucky it was a small amount and the company was very good to work with. I don't know what I would of had to do if they refused to refund my money and I had to somehow try to get it back from the bank/Visa. Luckily I spotted the purchase on my online banking statement almost immediately and cancelled the card before they rung up a few hundred bucks worth of shit too. I hope they get busted, jackass(es)... I'll not be using my (new) check card for anything other than ATM withdrawals now. |

the debit card works out good but the only thing is most of the time they set a limit on your spending to "protect" you from getting ripped for more that what the limit is set for. sounded good when they first told me but one time at a gunshow i was buying things left and right and when i finally found something i absolutely had to have my limit was reached and i was denied. shit is really embarrassing and sucks! other than that i like it |

Our Visa check card is issued through Bank of America. About two years ago I had a charge of 250.00 put on there after the order was canceled and the product was never even shipped to me. I found out on my statement that came in about 2 weeks later and called Visa. The money was put back the next business day and that was it. Also if you use your CC on line go to Visa.com and get yourself set up with Verified By Visa Verified By Visa This will 100% protect any on line purchase you make. Visa guarantees all their CC with their logo on them just like the regular credit cards. You always have buyer protection. The issue come in with your bank sometimes. I have found that CC work better with larger Banks. Less problems for some reason. BTW: The Verified By Visa uses another TEMPORARY number for on line purchase so you don't have to use your real account number. Edited to add: I use my CC for all purchases online and have yet to have an issue that hasnt been cleared up by Visa. This has been for 8 Years now. |
| general tip: for a credit card you can usually go to the issuer's web page and request various alerts to be place on your credit card. I got one if any charge over $10 on the card is made. If it is, I get an email. Sure beats checking your transaction history online to check for fraud. |

a co-worker used his bank card for an on-line purchase. His # was hi-jacked. He was notified by his bank of Bounced checks. He had over 2K in his checking acct, GONE + $360. in overdraft charges he had to pay the bank. Shortly after, MY bank sent me a notice they were Increasing my Overdraft protection to $1200.00 so i stopped in to inquire about their policy incase this happened to me. The manager called the main bank. (small local bank) as it turned out NO PROTECTION... YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT + OVERDRAFT CHARGES. " WTF ? ". I declined ANY overdraft protection, and quit using my card anywhere except the bank for cash. I've seen several times in the local paper where people in restruants were steeling Bank Card #s and using them. I now use my credit card for all transactions. blade409 |
