Hi all, I'm at college in an apartment and I'm looking into some cheap options for lockable storage, was hoping for some advice on this issue. |

how big does it have to be? If it's cheap its likely to be carried away if you don't bolt it down or bolt it into some studs in the wall. ETA: They have the cheapo Stackon metal 8 or 12 gun cabinets for under $100 at places like Dick's or Gander Mtn. Thats what I got and bolted it into my closet, and got some deadbolts for the closet doors. If someone wants it bad enough yeah anything can be taken, but I didnt have a grand to drop on a nice safe. Another thing I read is that some people may use torches to cut them open if they can't take the whole safe, so maybe some kind of "caution explosives inside" sign is another option. Not many people wanna torch a metal cabinet only to spark some powder inside. |
Nothing is as good as a real gun safe, but I have heard of people taking old refrigerators and putting locks on them. I would think if you bolt it to the wall, re-enforce the hinges...maybe something like this would fill the bill. The other thing would be to pick a closet and harden it, put a on a steel door with security hinges, deadbolt lock. Maybe line the inside walls with plywood. |

Stack-on has a locking gun cabinet that fits 8 (or is it 10) guns, and it costs around $100. It's not a safe, but it's better than nothing. It's small enough to fit in a closet and light enough to be carried by one person. Of course, it would be easy for someone to pick it up and haul it off. You could probably bolt it to the floor or wall, but kiss your damage deposit goodbye. |
| Just get one of those 100 buck strong boxes that they sell at walmart. They are enough to deter nosy friends and junkies looking for a quick score. Just stuff it in a closet and hang something long infront of it. Trench coats are good for hiding a stong box behind. |
That sounds about like what I'm looking for, I'm not too concerned about theft, what I am concerned about is drunken roommates wanting to play with my collection. LOL |
Sadly true. Even then, bolts/screws into wood can be defeated pretty easily. The only things that can't be easily overcome are size & weight. I went with the $700 Winchester-branded Granite safe. Its the cheapest "safe" on the market. At 600 lbs empty, it's hard to carry away. Comes with a S&G Group II lock and some fireproofing. Best deal on the market, IMHO. Might suck putting it in an apartment, though.
