Hey all! Well Ive got some questions about this if anyone can help me. Im 50% disabled from the military (82nd AIRBORNE INFANTRY!!!!! 2/505 FTW!)  and looking to start this process. Im trying to get them to pay for a local private college thats pretty expensive but its the only school in the area that has the degree that I want. Information security and privacy with a criminal justice track (kinda like identity theft police) So if anyone has any good ideas on what to say to the councelors or anything really at all Id really appreciate it.
Things I know
1. need 20% disabled -no problem got that
2. A learning plan- got that have a private guidence couselor for school

Advice?
1. What to say?
2. What to bring?
3. Any Ideas?

I'm going to be using the same program once I transfer to a four year university.  Right now I'm using the GI bill to finish up my 2yrs at a community college because I will pocket a lot more money doing it this way.  I'm going to me majoring in criminal justice.  You don't have to tell them much of anything in order to use the program just tell them what your going to go for and your plan and that's all you need to say.  Its really simple and should not be a hassle.  I first was going to use the program to go to a scuba diving school to become an instructor but decided to get a degree instead.  I went over all this with my counselor at the VA and it wasn't a big deal.  The program is really nice and I try to encourage anybody that is entitled to it to use it.  They will pay for any school that you want to attend.  They cover the tuition, books, and any type of equipment or tools that may be required for the school.  They also give you a check once a month to cover any other expenses.  If you have any other questions IM me I have a lot of information about the program and have talked to a lot of chapter 31 counselors.

Well Im going up to the Vet office tommorrow (Fri 3-7-08) Hopefully I wont have to wait in line to long im didnt make any appointment or anything i figure I just show up and give them the crazy airborne infantry man stare and theyll let me in!

Yeah finishing up community college with GI bill is NICE youll pocket lots of money. Make sure you take as many classes that will transfer AND be inside your degree track at the CC. Cause if you take classes that are not in your track they wont count the hours and it will lower your payment.

I have a little experience with chapter 31, so hopefully this can help.  When you look at this program you have to always be able to answer three questions and you'll then be in a good spot.

First of all, you have to look at your disabilty conditions and what limitations these conditions have on your employment.

Second, you have to look at the marketability of your occupational goal your striving for.

The third, you have to obviously make sure you like what your wanting to do.

The last one (the third comment above) is pretty well guaranteed since your the one that came up with this goal so now you need to look at the other two.  In relation to your disabilty, you have to make sure your employlment will not worsen your disabilty conditons or cuase you any other problems.  In relation to the second aspect above, you should make sure that once you complete the requisite training that you will in fact be able to acquire employment in this field.

All in all, just be honest and up front with what you want.  My experience with voc rehab (prior participant) was very positive.  Like all things, if you do your part then you'll be in a good spot.

So dont sweat it.
