[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Certified Pre Owned (Page 1 of 2)

| My fiancé is looking to purchase a Jeep Cherokee, but Ive never purchased a CPO before. Im mostly concearned with the reliability, which is why I'm looking at CPO with a warranty but didn't know if there was any specific loopholes or things I should be on the lookout for. Does the dealer typically require them to do all the maintenance to qualify for the extended warranty? We are having a very hard time finding on in black or granite locally which is her only really serious stipulation, and have seen some 100+ miles away that would be idea,l but I don't want to drive the distance for oil changes and things like that. Any advise would be appreciated, thanks. |

We have a CPO ford. You should not have to go to the dealer for oil changes. Just go in and ask for a sheet on what it all covers. It's not as many items after the regular warranty ends but it does cover a lot. |
|
Can't comment on the CPO, but if you find a vehicle you like at another dealer to far away, ask your dealer if they can get it for you.
That what took place when my wife bought her Jeep. She wanted a Black base model standard shift, only one available was several hundred miles away. Our dealer did some kind of trade with the other place to get the one my wife wanted. |

Certified Pre-Owned means dick with almost every brand. It's a gimmick. I think Hyundai might have a warranty that covers it as long as it fits specific things. But overall anyone can say anything because it doesn't mean anything. Hyundai cpo transfers the remainder of the original manufacturer warranty. When i bought my GT it became a cpo after someone leased it, had 24k miles on so i negotiated an additional 25k miles on the warranty and got it back to original status. Plus lifetime tires , not sure if other manufacturers will do the same. |

CPO is a scam. If you're not buying new, you're buying used. There is no "special" level of used. |

I tried that already but thats been the only one she's like out of the small SUV's What a piece of junk. Bought brand new and not beat on. So far differential, drive shaft, power steering rack and pump, front ball joints, front universal joints. The truck has about 40,000 miles on it. The truck will be gone by 60,000 when the warranty runs out. Don't do it. ETA I forgot that the navigation screen always freezes. |

A lot of car manufacturers give a longer power train warranty for their CPO cars. Not a gimmick. If you buy a 40K mile Mazda 3 CPO, you've got another 60K mileage warranty on the powertrain. Buy it new and it's 3 yr / 36K miles. So tell me what is the gimmick? |

CPO is going to cover mechanical for 7/100 from the original date the car was sold. Jeep also gives a 3 month/3000 mile "bumper to bumper" warranty.
Been thinking about a Cherokee Trailhawk for a while but the truck trade in isn't right yet. Good luck and post pics when you get one! Edit: Also buy the lifetime power train warranty. |

My sister had a CPO VW. Saved her arse when it came to it breaking because it happened a LOT.
I looked at a Prius after my wife's 2009 got totaled, there was one that was in really good condition, Toyota dealer said it'd be cheaper to buy it used than certified, as they'd jack up the price. Same with the Lexus we ended up buying. |
|
CPO is one thing, but you want a definite answer (carfax?) on what the vehicle was before buying it. A CPO of a lease is one thing, but I imagine that CPO-warrantied vehicles could have been rentals as well - and you most certainly don't want a rental. Again, usually they are lease vehicles that were traded in to the dealership where you find them, but sometimes they get traded to sister-dealerships that may be another brand of vehicle, then sent over to the Jeep lot.
If having the Jeep satisfies the 'gotta look cool' thing, then that's an excuse to buy it. Otherwise, if it were for a long-term investment in a daily driver, I'm sure the decision would be one of a few other makes of vehicles. As for all the items CPO checked-over list (100 to 120 different areas), most of them are just 'checks' to see that they exist or work. |
| CPO inspections require that all systems work, everything works, all fluids are in spec, systems serviced if not, brake pads have to have more than 4mm pad life (50% on average), tires have to have greater than 5/32" tread (50% on average), no more than 1 panel can have paint work, no frame damage, no bags deployed. CPO regulations are fairly strict. Our manufacturer sends a corporate rep every two months and randomly calls a hour before he gets there telling us what three cars to pull up and we have to have them ready for inspection. Buying CPO you have nothing to worry about from most dealers. |

CPO warranty programs ARE offered and backed by the original manufacturer. You are getting them confused with aftermarket extended warranty programs. |

You sir are completely wrong.... My manufacturer runs a 7yr/100k on the powertrain on CPO vehicles. Powertrain includes the complete powertrain, includes seals, gaskets, fuel Injection, fuel pump and ECU. A wheel bearing goes out, Its fixed, a valve cover gasket leaks, Its fixed.... the deductible is $50.00. Any same brand dealership nationwide. Also includes roadside assistance for the 7/100 (like triple A). We don't do a full coverage certified but saying it mean dick is like going to buy a used car acting like a dick and expecting or thinking your getting a good deal.... Certified Pre owned! We make sure it really is used. Because we wouldn't sell you new car for a used car price!
A Gimmick in my book. Means they checked the oil and emissions would pass, and you got decent tires. That said most CPO are newer cars with low miles. So less risk in general. If they actually do the inspections. I still think it is a marketing scheme. |

CPO means Dick as far as condition. They did an examination of the vehicle and serviced what needed to be done for safety (bald tires, worn down brake pads, recalls for airbags...)
What makes CPO "special" is you get a "Extended Warranty" for up to 100K included in the price. You can usually get a better "Extended Warranty" (more places accepted and more items covered) if you did it on your own, but to each their own... There is no free lunch and a CPO is just a low mileage used car with a extension of warranty... |

LOL! Marketing.
Salesperson: " Do you want an extended warranty on this used vehicle? Only cost you $2000.00 but it covers almost everything for blah blah blah miles and months " Buyer : " NO". Salesperson : " This is a CPO vehicle so it is covered for blah blah blah miles and months ! Isn't that great? " Buyer : "YES"! Salesperson doesn't have to sell an extended warranty as it's in the price of the vehicle. No free lunches. LOL! |
|
CPO is real; ignore them. Some here like to shit in all the CPO threads. If you want a warranty on a used car would you buy it from a third party who only makes money by denying claims, or a CPO from the manufacturer themselves who wants to sell you vehicles for the rest of your driving life?
Oh yeah, that article? It says the manufacturers use pretty language to say that the warranty covers what the warranty says it covers. Shocker. |

I had a CPO Lexus long ago. A month before the CPO warranty ended the AC wouldn't always blow full blast, still worked ok but not full power. I called them up and told them that along with several other small problems I had noticed. They sent a driver 100+ miles to pick my car up. Left me with a brand new Lexus to drive for a few weeks while they fixed everything on mine. Didn't cost me a dime and they didn't give me any trouble. Not all automakers and dealerships are the same. Quoted:

Back in 2011 we bought a cpo 2009 suburban with low 20k miles. It still had all the factory warranty as if we bought it new. They even did free oil changes. Wasn't a stipulation that they do it but they did, so we took them up on it.
It was a clean vehicle , more so than the non cpos we had seen. I didnt, and still don't think it's a gimmick. |

First thing to say is CPO is only as good as the dealer you buy from.
I bought a CPO from a bad dealer. Given a 'clean' carfax which I tried to hand back without looking at it because carfax is bullshit Told because the car was only serviced at the dealer and there was a record, CPO was easy to certify drove off with my car (4 door sedan, 37k miles, 2 years old) and told I needed to bring it back next week for a tune up Now, against the advice of my father, I bought a 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty extension for $1800, and boy was I glad I did. I dropped off the car, told should only be a day or 2. No call, no communication for 3 days, called on day 4 "we have a few more things to do to certify the car as CPO per purchase agreement - SO YOU SOLD ME A CAR AS CPO, WITHOUT ACTUALLY DOING THE CERT BEFORE I DROVE OFF?? Day 10 NOW IM PISSED (they gave me a loaner) I call and say I want the fucking car I bought what the fuck is the deal??? They tell me I can come and pick up on day 11, they 'received the parts they were waiting for' Go into the dealer, and see the work order. The ENTIRE rear end under the body was replaced to the tune of $4700, thanks to the shitty extended warranty, I paid nothing. I'm talking the rear frame, struts, bearings, springs, etc etc everything was new. After that, I took a close look at the vehicle and realized the trunk was skewed...the trunk lid had unequal spacing from each taillight, telltale sign of a rear ending. hmmm, interesting a rear-ending was never mentioned on the carfax... Needless to say, many lessoned learned. I just bought another Nissan, from a different dealer, and this time it had 13 miles on the ODO. Buyer beware. Closely inspect any used car you buy. Service at the dealer, and haggle them for service. Extended warranties are usually BS, but do a cost benefit analysis to see if its worth it in your case, as there are some cases where it makes sense. |
