A guy I work with has a couple of Century G3 rifles.  He offered to sell me one and I was wondering what they are worth.

He said they have been in his safe for about 6 years.  They both have wood stock sets and I'm not sure how many mags it will come with.

I asked him what he wanted and he said "Make an offer"

What should I look for on the rifle before I make an offer ?

Are these reliable quality rifles?

What are the good points of the G3 style rifle ?

I know that there are better rifles out there than Century so don't tell me to save and buy something better.  The way I look at it, if I can pick up a fun plinker for cheap, why not.

I was thinking of offering $400.00.  Is this too low ? or too high ?

Thanks

In general, Century has a bad reputation for reliability and the quality of their builds.  Some century rifles work fine, and others dont.

I'd think that $400 would be very generous for any Century rifle, but it depends in part on which ones they are.  I believe there are various "versions" of the Century rifles.  Some had the blocky receiver with a scope rail built in - that might be functional, but is super-ugly and looks nothing like an HK.  I wouldn't even pay $300 for one of those abominations, even if it was reliable (which they often were not).

Other, later, versions might have a more correct-looking receiver - but still probably have pinned/welded compensators instead of the correct flash supressor that an HK usually had (because of the Assault Weapons Ban - during which these were probably purchased).

I seem to vaguely recall that there might have been some really early Century rifles that might have been pretty nice - but perhaps I am thinking of CETME.  Others will probably know.

I used a century receiver to build my G3 myself. At the time it was about the only game in town. Well the receiver is out of spec. and I had to hand fit all the parts to it. But once they are fitted it works great. I don't shoot it a lot but it is very accurate and 100% reliable.

Stop by and give me $100. For that I will hit you in the head with a metal folding chair.

It will be just like owning a Century Arms G3 only it will save you $300.

I've got a century G3, post-ban and all that.  Most reliable rifle I've ever owned.

I also only paid 300 OTD for it.

ETA:

I bought it from a gun dealer who stands behind his products.  He's also one of my good friends now-adays.

If you are paying over $100, you are paying too much. Take it to the range and shoot it, adjust the sights, and see how you like it. You will see what everybody is talking about...

It mainly depends if they shoot and are reliable. I have on one of the crappy aluminium recivers that is still a accurate and reliable rifle despite many claims to the contrary. True it looks like shit, but I don't really care.

Sounds like they are Century CETMEs and not G3s  they have different internals and a few other minor differences. $400 is too much imo.  I've never had a problem with mine, but if i could do it again i would just buy a PTR-91

if it was selling for $200 - $250 range i would buy one.

I had one of these, always worked great. Sold it to downsize to a managable # of different ammo calibers to keep stocked.

Why, because of the wood stocks ??

I take it that a Century G3 is worth more than a Century CETME

Mine actually works really well, ran a case full of SA 7.62 through it last year without one problem. It came with Henzolt-Wetzlar scope , all for $500 out the door.

Basically the same difference between a HK G3 and a CETME rifle. Except in this case both were built using substandard Centrury Arms receivers, generally poor grade parts and sloppy build.

My CETME has been flawless, wich is more than I can say about both of the FALs I owned. Dont get me wrong, they ant no DSA or anything ,but well worth the $300
