Need some recommendations on a protective case for a Samsung Galaxy 5.

It doesn't need to be water proof but water resistant is a plus.

S5 is already water resistant. Really depends on how big you want your phone after the case goes on vs how much you drop your phone I'm pretty careful with mine, and didn't go whole hog with the case - decided on Spigen slim armor with their glas TR screen protector. If you want more protection, go with their tough armor (a bit thicker)

Video review for tough armor  - skip to 3:47 for impact test (first part of video compares slim vs tough). Slim armor will likely take less impact, but I'm pretty sure still reasonable.

Glas Tr review (skip to 5:50, 8:20, and 11:00)

Edit - if you do go with the glas tr, dust in the room is an issue - best trick is go into the bathroom, get lots of steam going from the shower to settle all the dust, then use the hinge method to put the protector on. I didn't do the steam method, but I think I was just lucky I didn't get dust trapped.

I alternate between an Otterbox Defender and an Otterbox commuter wallet depending on what I am doing.

my lifeproof (now owned by Otter I think) has saved my Iphone numerous times. Dropped it in the river while fly fishing and shit like that and never had a problems.

My wife and I have had S4's for a year. She has the Otterbox Defender, and I have the UAG. The UAG is MUCH better.

The Otterbox has some issues. The clear plastic screen protector allows dust and dirt to get under the screen which can scratch it. I need to take it apart every few months to clean the screen. Also, the rubber cover loosens over time. It is much larger and stickier than the UAG; with our phones sitting next to each other, they don't even look like the same phone due to the difference in bulk.

The UAG is great. It doesn't add a lot of bulk; easy to get in and out of the pocket. It comes with a stick on screen protector which still looks brand new after 1 year.

Both cases have protected our phones from drops. She has dropped hers a handful of times. The phone usually turns off when she drops it. I have dropped mine twice. The UAG has protected it with no issues (no loss of power either).

I strongly recommend the UAG.
