Got a couple of days off in a few weeks and was thinking of flying the RV down to Cedar Key FL for a couple of days. I know one other RV builder/pilot who has been there; he said that he didn't have any issues but you'll be keenly aware of three things: that here is no airport security, that your RV is probably the most expensive thing on the island, and that it would fit on a largish airboat.
Anyone here been there before? Any issues? |

Cool place. Tell the taxi driver lady that you need a ride into town on frequency 122.90. Lol. Seriously? That car was pretty rough more than a few years ago. Â Adds to the fun experience. I wouldn't worry about your plane, it's a very quiet place. Â fun runway, mind the bird sanctuary on the west side |

We took the Navajo there today and got lunch at Steamer's. They have excellent clam chowder as well. The bacon blue oysters were a bit heavy, but good, as were the Rockefeller, but the raw ones were the best. The lady has a minivan now and we called her while en-route. Another option is the golf cart place. Call them up and they'll leave you a cart at the airport. I prefer this as the openness of the cart is more enjoyable and you can do some exploring.
In regards to airport security, there's a locked gate with the code posted right on a placard that you can probably see from outside the 4ft fence that is laid down in one place. They've recently resurfaced the runway and parking area. If you arrive on a Saturday, there's a chance you might not find a parking spot. I would not be worried about my airplane being violated there. |

Cool - now I'm more excited to go. Just hang out, eat some seafood, and relax for a few days. No set agenda. Quoted:

What are you planning to do? Go fish or something? Just hang out, eat some seafood, and relax for a few days. No set agenda. Few places better and none more relaxed IMHO. |

I made a trip out to CDK today for the purpose of preparing a video of the approach, the ramp, and clips of the island. I made the absolutely most perfect power off pattern from 5 miles out and didn't capture it. My GoPro session seems to be screwing up (also didn't capture anything when I was doing my training in the Extra 330). When I arrived, all the parking spots were full, I pushed my plane backwards into the grassy area facing the planes on the tie-downs. This was the first time in my years of flying out there that I've had to park somewhere other than a tie-down. If this happens to you, you do not want to park on the opposite side of the runway as you can get stuck in sand, but parking in the grass facing the tie-downs is ok. There was a light sport, a Grumman AA5, a 6-place Piper (Cherokee six, lance or similar), a Cessna 170?, and a Lancair Columbia 300 parked at the tie-downs (a couple left while I was at lunch). Prior to leaving, I called the golf cart places I could find online and they seemed confused when I asked them if they could leave one for me at the airport. However, on departure, there was a golf cart from a place that I didn't see online with a different phone number sitting at the airport, so I suppose someone will deliver them. The phone number on that golf cart was 727-410-2112.
The winds tend to be consistent with Crystal River, KCGC. When you announce your position within 5 miles, the lady who drives the taxi (if you prefer the taxi or cannot get a golf cart) will ask if you need a ride via CTAF. She is the de-facto Unicom and will advise you of which runway the winds favor, et cetera. It's $10 round-trip per person. She will charge you only once when she drops you off back at the airport. She loves to talk about Cedar Key and perhaps may be worth calling to check conditions/parking. Steamers will give you 10% off if you tell them that you flew in, which is generally natural for pilots to announce anyways. I can send you her phone number over arfcom messaging if you want and it might be worth calling her before you depart from SGS to check conditions. Today she was saying that part of the waterfront roads will be closed to traffic due to construction next week. |

Yeah. They're pretty cool there......their oysters are great too. But that is one itty bitty runway. I think they've had a couple off plane go of the end That sounds so cool. I'm pretty amped about going, but ... found a cracked exhaust pipe today. Parts are on order though so hopefully won't delay the trip at all. I've heard the several pilots tell me the runway is short, but at 2300' it sure seems like enough provided you don't come in at Vref+30 or something equally silly. |
