Obviously it's detected/confirmed after a biopsy, but what was it that sent you (or someone you know) to the doctors in the first place?

It is the associated symptoms... So it depends where the cancer is... Examples:
Gastrointestinal painless bleeding = Colorectal cancer
Breast painless lump(s) = breast cancer
and so on...

My uncle went in for back pain. Found out he had late-stage bone cancer in his spine.

My father-in-law went in for chronic lower back pain. Advanced kidney cancer. He passed away three months after that.
My step brother went in for a nagging cough. Lung cancer.
