| I am opening a retail store and have a 12MP point and shoot type camera and it sucks. I am looking for a camera that can get some great quality photos of merchandise that I can then use on our website. I would also like to pickup a camera that could be used to other stuff as well. Any recommendations? |

Besides that you take the pictures it is your skill that makes a good image. For clarifications sake though you need to add some more detail to your request. Are you looking for a compact camera or a DSLR?? what is your budget??. A DSLR is what I think I'm looking for. As far as my budget, I don't know, it kind of changes with the hour. |

What type of point and shoot camera is it?
While a DSLR will probably do a great job for you, it may not be necessary for you to get one - some point and shoot cameras can in fact do an excellent job of making product shots, especially if they offer some options for manual control (for example, Canon makes some very capable p-s cameras). How large are the items that you want to photograph? Will they fit into a "light tent"? Do you have a light tent? |

I have nothing in terms of equipment, including no light tent. The items are about 3' long at max. |

Im sure your camera can do a fine job. What makes or breaks the photo you want is the set up. Buy a small light tent set up or DYI one.. You can do a nice one and save a bunch.
Take a look at this.. you can find more on you tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zARqGgHjNc&feature=related |

I also think a decent DSLR would be a decent x-mas gift. So what DSLR would be a good choice for someone new to photography. |
I'm a Nikon guy but Cannons are just as good. I had a D40 and moved up to a D300. I got some of the best glass aka lenses I can afford. My 70-200 2/8 cost me 2100.00 at the time and I just ordered a Sigma prime 85 1.4 at 950.00
As you can see you can get crazy just like with the guns. Here is a simple guide to Nikons line. http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/nikon-digital-slr.html People upgrade all the time so you can pick up a good starter kit for a good price local I bet. People upgrade in the first year of buying there first DSLR if they really like photography. |
You decide.
