This is a dupe from a post i have in GD, but i figured i'd get real world user responses here.

I'm going back to the sandbox and i want more/better pics/video this time.  Anyone have suggestions on cameras or camcorders (digital) that are small enough to mount on a helmet, or your body armor and not get in the way.  i'm looking in the 400 dollar down range.

Thanks guys.

Hey bro, look into the Canon SD series.  They are freaking tiny.

Awesome prices at Newegg.com right now too!

Ps.  By tiny, I mean like just barely bigger than credit card size.  One I was looking at at Walmart the other day had a 2" LCD screen and the camera was maybe another inch wider and like 1/4" taller.  So maybe 3" by 2.5" wide/tall and 1-1.5" or so thick.

This one is 3.5x2.3x1"...  www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5238355

Its one of the more top of the line cameras but almost all the SD series are that tiny.

I bet you could take a PVS14 mount and somehow tape/tie down that kind of camera to it and have it on there...

Well I was thinking more in the sense of daytime ops when you wouldnt have it mounted or wouldnt need it.

Are you really wanting to record night ops where you arent going to be able to see anything anyway?

Unless you're going to be doing night op raids into houses and the such.  Then your going to be almost out of luck...

I have a Canon SD400 and carry it with me every single day.  It is no bigger than my cell phone and I have taken thousands of pics with it here, its great to always have it on me.  If you are looking for a helmet cam get a "pencil" or "lipstick" color CCD camera (under $100) and a small MiniDV camcorder (cheap JVC one would do fine) and mount the tiny little camera on the helmet or weapon, and run the cable to your camcorder, safely tucked away.  I am going to do the same thing for my motorcycle helmet, and thought about putting it in a rail mount for my ARs to give a unique perspective too.  You want something like this: spyville.com/highresolutioncolor-bulletcamera.html

You'll need a 12VDC power supply for it too, you can make one with AAs, AAAs, or maybe find a holder for 4 CR123s, that would be my preference for small size and long run time.    Something like this would be cheapest though:  spyville.com/9v-battery-clip.html

no, just day-ops, but i'd only mount something there if i could get if off kwik, i've gotten stuck out on day-ops that turn into night-ops way too many times.

True

Use the head-mount for the PVS14.  Its what I did when the measly ass piece of shit pot metal NVG mounts broke when my helmet got knocked off a bag less than a foot off the ground.

i was trying to come up with a way to use that little tripod screw hole on the bottom of my pentax to put a rail attachment on my camera so i could mount it on my weapon. get a cool guncam angle. im gonna see how it works, anyone else doing the same?

I went throught two digital cameras when i was overthere, definitley get a nice one, see if you can get one of those plastic cases that go over them for underwater use too, might come in handy from sand and stuff.

What is your MOS by the way? (21BoomCBTENGR) You can PM me for OPSEC reasons.

Pentax Optio W20, similar to the olympus above, waterproof, zoom lens, take it to the beach drop it in the sand no problems.  SD card, and good battery life.

As for the mounting, you can pretty easily use a standard tripod screw, on a small bracket and tuck the bracket into webbing.

As we say in the Police Dept.  "you're gonna be a detective arentcha?"

UPDATE::  I went by Best Buy and got a little Aiptek handheld digicam,, it should work great,  8 megapixel still shots.  And if it doesnt work or it breaks, i'm only out 90 bucks, so we'll see how this holds up and i may get another one bfore things are said and done.
