I am a US Marine who served from 1979-1985 and carried the M16A1 rifle.  I just joined the forum because I decided to build up an AR in the A1 format.  I bought an A1 upper at a gun show yesterday, along with a generic poly lower (it was cheap, it will do for now).

I'm busily and happily tracking down USGI type parts, and I presume I'll need some help and advice when the time comes, hence my introduction to this discussion forum.

I'm 56 years old, a Jarhead as I said, and I still actively train in Isshinryu karate, so I stay pretty active.

I am looking forward to learning and building with y'all's assistance if you're so inclined.

Semper Fi,

Wiggy (Bill if you must know)

Welcome Wiggy.  The link to the Retro forum posted above will help.

I found this forum the same way you did.  I served in the Army from '83 to '86 and wanted an M16A1 clone.  I made mine out of a Colt M16A1 upper and a Nodak Spud NDS-16A1 lower (about 1/4 of the way down the linked page) and an M16A1 buttstock and pistol grip.  It's still one of my favorite firearms.  I will warn you however, it may not be your last AR

Thank you!  I have been looking at the Nodak Spud uppers and lowers, but it seems they are backordered at Brownells and I'm on the email notification list in case they should reappear.  I have seen some on various auction sites, but they seem to go for quite a bit of money.  The M16A1 upper I picked up yesterday was complete with forward assist (round, not tear drop, but I can fix that), A1 front and rear sights, ejection cover, 20 inch (looks like GI) barrel, and a weird heavy floating handguard thing that I will need to remove.  So the upper is close to what I want.  Need the triangular guards and triangle plate, teardrop forward assist, charging handle, and bolt carrier group.

The lower needs everything except the lower!

I'll start picking up bits and pieces now that I have the basics, though.  I'm excited, been wanting to do this for years.

I've owned a lot of guns, been a hunter since age 10, but I've never owned an AR, so this is new to me except for my years in the Corps with my M16A1.

For a second, I thought maybe Jerry Wigutow had joined the forum.

Well, welcome anyway, other Wiggy.

Welcome, lots of stuff to be learned here, thanks for your service.

Unfortunately, this is not a technical discussion! < I believe that is MY call to make - F >

Welcome Wiggy!  I'm a 50yo former soldier myself.  A couple of notes I should point out.

1) If you're interested in M16A1s (I was issued one as well) we have a Retro forum a couple forums down from this one.  Lots of great info tacked up there, and a great bunch interested in the 'historical' variations of the M16 line.  They helped me put together my M16A1 clone:

The above was built with a M16E1 upper I bought from the Equipment Exchange, a NoDak Spud lower I bought directly from the company, and some bits and pieces I picked up at gunshows and Fulton Armory.

You can jump to the retro forum by clicking here.

2) We have some forums and resources for new members.
AR Basics forum

Site Help Forum (tech support & instructions on uploading/posting photos for example)

Acronyms and abbreviations used on this site, including ARFcom 101 (bits on the culture of the site).

Now this is a technical forum (as is most of the site).  Politeness is key (as is keeping the threads on topic and technical).  If you want to kick back or joke around we have the General Discussion Forum (click here).  You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy that is fun to hang around in than GD.

Oh and since you're a Vet you might want access to our Military forum (only visible to members), for that they will need a redacted copy of current military credentials, an e-mail from your military account, or a redacted copy of your DD-214.  Contact staff member Striker for more info or where to send the information.

Welcome to the site, there is plenty to see here, make sure you check out our other forums like Industry, Outdoors, Training, the Amory, and the Hometown forums.

Thanks everyone!  I am sorry if I broke any forum rules.  I was looking for a 'new members introduce yourself' forum as many discussion forums have, but didn't see one.  I will keep future discussions appropriate to the subforum in question.

There is no problem with introductions here.  Usually the are here, in Basics, or in GD - depending on the person, all are fine!

While AR Discussion is a tech forum, photo threads on defined topics (like SPR builds or MK18 builds) are allowed, as are 'introduction posts'; as it's usually one of first forums new members, interested in the AR-15, post in.

Sure is, just pointing out that quite a few non-technical discussions end up starting here.

Welcome fellow "Black Boot" issued Jarhead.

No offense intended... but skip the poly lower. You'd be surprised how easily most can break off back at the buffer tube threads.
