Does anyone else feel this stretching pain in their ass from the cable company raping them every month? At something like $90 a month for basic cable and internet I'm pretty sick of it... but the alternatives are not much better... as much as I hate about 90% of the shit on TV it's the only good shows are on cable. And going back to dial-up access... well, that would be like trading in a new Ferrari for a 79' Pinto.

I haven't heard anything good about the dish and I don't know much about DSL.

I was wondering what the cable company woudl do if I cancelled our service and then signed back up on one of the new service rates... and just keep doing that to keep the price down. What do they do to prevent people from playing the system this way?

What about you guys?

Jesus...$90!!!  Basic here is $35.

They won't give you any love on quitting and signing up, BUT I have called and told them I was switching to the dish and they gave me a 6 month reduction.  You have to speak to someone higher than the service rep on the phone, though.

Edited to add: cable and net here are about $70 when combined

We live in the sticks, have a bazillion premium channels I mean every HBO, Showtime, STARZ, you name it, we got it. Plus, a DVR, a regular box and 1 free pay-per-view a month. All for $69.00.  And our RoadRunner is free. It's a pretty good deal so far.

I am getting raped too. Bright House is the ONLY service provider in the region of a large metropolitan city (can anybody say racket?) and my digital cable with HBO and internet cable is $110. HBO sucks, I am cancelling it today.

That's why I have DSL and DirecTV.
$43 gets me SPEED, OLN, Discovery and History plus local channels.
$27 gets me DSL.

As far as cancelling and re-signing, that's a policy of your cable provider.
The one time I did it (Cox) they made me return the modem and re-apply.
They were going to charge me the new service fee, after talking to the manager they let me slide.

Damn you're complaining?  I pay over $150, but that's internet, 4 digital cable boxes 1 of which is a DVR.  And I have the 'Gold' package which is all the premium channels.

Sounds like a great oppurtunity for a bright and eager entreprenaur.

$90 for cable & internet... I think that is with the modem "rental". No box though... I don't get digital cable... just regular old basic cable. I would never pay for HBO and all those other trash stations when I can just rent a movie. I wish they would come up with a system where you could pay for a package of the channels you want... so I'm not paying for crap like Mtv, VH1, BET, and the 10-15+ HSN-type stations. I also think it's total bullshit that I pay for stations that go off the air at night and run infomericials until about 7am... Not only am I paying the cable company, but the fuckers that advertise the scutzy steamers and silver bullet chopper are also paying them.... so they're double dipping and I'm still taking it in the ass.

I might take the advice of calling them and asking to speak with someone higher than a service rep and telling them I am going to cancel unless they drop my rates. What do I have to lose...

Stealing or "borrowing" cable... ehh... I have a little too much integrity to take any chances and possibly get hit with some sick fine. I figure all the DVD's I "back-up" instead of buy and music I downloaded more than paid for the losses I have incurred.

$60 for cable internet, $42 for Direct TV.  DTV has a better picture, better channel guide and I hate the cable company.  Too far out for DSL...

$60 for cable internet? Where are you in NH? Must be WAY out in the boonies... I thought my in-laws were in the boonies living in Milton, but they get cable-net for a decent price.

As for direct-tv... I haven't heard anything good about it.... The whole weather = bad reception thing is a huge turn-off.

Most cable companies charge more for cable internet service if you aren't a subscriber to at least basic cable.

I pay $32 a month for basic.  About 70 channels, the only channel missing is Food TV, which the bastards will not add.  Never mind that every other system in the area offers Food TV on their basic lineup.  Of those 70, five or six are local access that never have anything on them.  Digital basic adds about $20 per month and 15 extra channels, none of which are worth a damn.

I'm currently paying $27 a month for internet access.  Come next February that will increase to $40 a month.  I'm also currently paying $5 a month for modem rental.  Lightning hit my modem last month and I haven't had a chance to get a warranty replacement.

Contrast our local cable prices with those in another local town.  $55 for basic cable, and they increase the price by 2%-5% just about every 6-8 months.  And they pretty much require you to have a digital box.  Sign up for their internet service, add one premium service, and you're paying about $125 a month.
