Running an MSI board with Nvidia chip with a 6600 CPU, standard cooling (board has a heat sink with dedicated fan)
Playing CoD4 with 8800GT. Anyway, display freezes with discoloration in the middle of game play requiring hard shut down (flicking the power switch) I assumed it was a GPU problem. Checked the temps and the system temp is hanging steady at 207 Celsius (yes, celsius) GPU is from 50-80 (which is acceptable) I can't believe the system temps are that high. Running nothing it stays at 207 I assume the temp monitor is broken. Any ideas? |

Open the case and clean all the dust out, there is probably a whole lot, recheck temps after that.leave the case side off and confirm the fan is working.
If the temp doesn't go down you may need to try taking the heatsink off and reseating it.But then you would need some new thermal compound. If the temp sensor isn't broken the chip may have fried. |

Did the first steps.
I was thinking about resetting the heat sinks, I hate messing around with that, but its been two years. Reapplication couldn't hurt. The game plays for a while, so I think the chip is still good. If my chip was fried, doubt I would get anything out of it. |

Clean everything out, and make sure your fans are functioning. Also look for clogged filters, or dead MB fan-headers.
207C is waaaay out of range... and probably an erroneous reading. Your computer would be on fire if that were the case. That said, you're clearly overheating, so check all fans, filters, and try running the machine with the side panel removed and a regular table-top fan aimed toward the MB. You probably have a dead fan somewhere (check the PSU fan also... that one is commonly neglected, and can result in a dead PSU, or even take down the whole system). My solution is to periodically open up all my machines, take them outside, take off the side panel, and use a leaf-blower on all the parts/fans/sinks. Works wonders. |
| I use Core Temp to monitor my cpu temps - you may also want to download Nvidia Precision Tune and check the temps for your video card |

And my computer stopped freezing, who knows. Time to build a new one. the alienware box is on its 4th build already. |

Those temps seem to be in the proper range. But 207 degrees Celsius or 404 degrees Fahrenheit- wooeee that is HOT!! That is close to baking a pizza in your oven.
Your room would have felt like the oven was on- are you sure that it was 207 C and not 207 F? I think maybe you should check MSI forums regarding temps or possibly look for an MSI BIOS update- |

Wow, expensive. My computer cost me 1700. They would charge me 3000... ![]() |
