Billness came up with the idea of setting up a Free for All Private Match. We can get 12 people in there. Using headsets, everyone can hear everything said. Personally, I use UAV Jammer/Ex. Cond. and silencers. That way I never show on OPFOR radar. I have always found success flanking. It seems everyone gets bogged down fighting and don't check their flanks. Every part of the maps have general choke points. If you can collectively corner the other team and close off escape points, then you can keep them spawning in that same spot (generally speaking). |
+1 to all the above. I like to play Headquarters because many people rush the HQ. I usually take a roundabout route to catch guys on their flank. This is often good for 2-3 kills or more, though I often miss out on points for HQ capture. Remember to shoot and scoot, though! The choke point strategy is valid and can be effective, with coordination. I've been on the losing side of that several times and it is a royal bitch to get out of. I've found that any team will get a significant lift in effectiveness by just communicating. I think a pair of guys with the kit whomper's mentioned, working together on the flanks, could really chew through the opponent. If one goes down, the other can usually finish off the enemies, and hopefully his partner will spawn right by him shortly. Bonus: it should really piss off the enemy, which is often a good thing. Silently creeping through buildings can help in room clearing. Remember, lots of folks (especially top players) pay attention to the sounds around them. Sometimes this can lull people into a false sense of security if they've come to depend on people being loud, or rushing like crazy. I'd be curious to know from folks with real infantry training if there are any ideas from that that have helped in the game. I'm down to work on maps with folks anytime, though I'm usually not on until late at night and sometimes have to step away for a while. (Sorry we couldn't link up yesterday, whomper!) |
Shoot them before they shoot you. Pretty much it. I'm not infantry (Engineer, Navy) but I still don't think combat tactics really apply.. I've played paintball for years and every time I've played with people from any branch of the military, they're always at a disadvantage. It's a game and there's really no penalty for death. You have to take a risk at some point and you need to be able to do it without hesitation. No problem in a video game but for some reason people are sometimes afraid of little gelatin pellets. Using combat tactics in a game that only vaguely resembles combat isn't always a winning strategy. In the case of CoD4, the best strategy I can see is for your team to stick together. Left alone, you'll get picked off one by one. In any one-on-one matchup, two players of approximately equal skill have about a 50/50 chance of winning. Either one of you comes up behind the other (assumed equal probability) or one of you has better cover or starts firing first or gets a lucky headshot, etc. There's not much you can do to improve your odds other than become more skilled or to level up and get better weapons. If you stick together, though, the chances of a firefight taking out the entire squad diminishes. Even two players working together have a huge advantage. In a face-to-face, round the corner situation, (keeping the 50/50 probability the same for all three players) the team of two has the advantage of about 4-to-1 for the first kill and another 2-to-1 for the second man. That makes the odds 8-to-1 against the single player of successfully killing both opponents in a head-on fight. This is all rough, of course, and largeley dependent upon weapon loadouts, range, map type, available cover, etc. but it seems to be close enough. Even if one guy goes down, the second usually tags the baddie. Grenades change things because they can hit both players at once but once the bullets start flying, whipping out a grenade is usually suicide unless you can fall back quickly. I'd say that sticking together and moving as a group is the first and best strategy for any map, any game mode. Everything else is secondary. |

+1 this works exceptionally well in the ground war modes (team deathmatch and domination)... splitting up into two fireteams and working your way around the map generally yields some excellent results... especially in maps like pipeline, bog, ambush, or the missile silo one... speaking of strategy, any tips for the TV station part of the single player on veteran... i got stuck there pretty bad, so i've been playing multiplayer exclusively... i just can't beat that... i've tried everything... hanging back... pushing forward aggressively... holding in the office area and clearing guys... any tips? |

I would be up for some serious tactical consideration. I love playing with the Clan, but, it sucks to get raped by a clan that has their shit together. If anyone wants to set a time for planning, let me know and I'll be there. One thing about tactics, I have found some really good choke points that get me many kills. The problem is that the other team figures it out and they flank me or come from behind and then pick me off. It would be nice to have some designated back-up for those situations. I would be happy to provide support for anyone that wants it because I don't care about getting points for myself. |

Camp at the choke points in Crash. Once you own the two story with the roof access and two people covering the access points you can wipe the shit out of them. On downpour same thing. There are only two areas to cover the the north south attack point. Bloc is manuever. Be slow and work around the map to come from behind. The buildings creep so you have to squat when you move. Ambush you pick a side to assault and work around. A few campers to cover your rear to stop the other team from doing it. Stay out of the middle of the map. Overgrown is the best map with a good opportunity to snipe. Get on the roof top of the building with MG near the water tank using the dumpster and wall. You can also cross the roof of the bridge and get on the building far side accessing the gully. If you are playing hard corps, people will have no clue where the shots are coming from. Got a mad kill streak going the other night. Wet work, let them come to you. claymores to protect the ladders. You charge in, you are going to die. A few snipers are a must to protect your ass. Own the heights on your own side of the ship and give the rest to the enemy. If your enemy doesn't defend well sneak to their back and knife their snipers. Lots of fun. |

Communicate with your team mates. It is the best advantage that you will have, and it will lead to better strategy. I play with a few old friends from my Halo 2 clan days, every now and then, and it is really amazing how much of a difference it makes when people are constantly communicating; calling out targets; where you are at on the map, and where you are being flanked. It makes a hell of a difference. I was on the roof next to the propane tank on Ambush the other day covering for my team during domination. My team mates were constantly saying "guns- left side, sneaking over." "guns-center, on 'b'" I just kept covering targets as I was directed. I had a hell of a streak, and we dominated to the extreme. It was due to great communication. Some people probably get tired of the constant voices, but if you like to win, you get used to them. I talk a lot, , and probably annoy the hell out of my team mates from time to time.I've found that ARFCOMMers are pretty good at communicating for the most part. I love playing with you all, when I get the chance. |
We did this in Halo 2 and it made a huge difference in our play, when everyone knew what the hell they were describing. During practices, held nightly, you had to be at 2 per week, we would "walk" through each map describing rooms/buildings, and naming them. Most of the buildings in COD4 already have some nicknames that people use. If you play enough with people who talk, you will get to know most of them. I'm still learning.

For larger maps in Team Deathmatch, I've found through experience that the best strategy is to flank the other team by myself. More guys kill, and most of the time, they are looking the wrong way. My K/D ratio is around 1.25, and over the last week, it would probably be more like 2.5. m16-red dot- stopping power- deep impact- 3 frag- 1 smoke. |

In Team Deathmatch I think it is important to occupy a couple areas and hold them down. For example on Bog I think it is best to hold down the East half of the map. A good setup to have is a couple guys watch the East building exit, have 2 guys floating around the pile in the middle and watching the Northside, then maybe a couple snipers in the back. This way you know which direction the enemy is coming from. IMHO you get in trouble when you have no idea where the enemy is going to hit you from. As a general rule, if you find yourself being pinned down the enemy, you have only yourself to blame. You should throw out smoke to block their visibility, then maneuver under cover of it into or around their positions. If you don't want them to regroup and gang up on you once you're back there, bring a UAV jammer and suppressed weapon. Such a position becomes similar to having a rook on the enemy's 7th rank. And just as in chess, don't forget that the enemy can't shoot through his teammates. So if you find yourself in a room with three enemies, two of whom are oblivious to your presence, use them as cover while you fight the third, without attracting their attention. Remember also, your in-game radar has a compass around it. Use that when communicating with your team, or directions relative to your team's spawn center. "Go left" from a spawn position on the west side means work clockwise to the north from the spawn. "Watch out for the guy heading up the stairs in the building on the east" is pretty clear if you glance at your radar compass. One more thing. Learn exactly how the spawn system works in TDM. Your teammates spawn as far from the enemy as possible, which means that you can manipulate your spawn position, and the enemy's, through maneuver and control of dominant map positions. If your team all runs the same way, even if they get slaughtered they will likely shift the spawn position. If they run both ways, even if they're very successful, you will continue to spawn in the same spot. On maps like Crash, where the southwest spawn position is a slaughterhouse, this can be devastating. If need be, change your plans to include advancing in the same direction as your team, when the situation requires it, and vice versa. |

Good stuff. UAV jammer with a suppressed gun just creates havoc. But you have to work alone or your teammates give you away. The other night had a guy try to kick me for cheating. I only have a few challenges left on elite and humiliation and I will take them if they come, but I am not working for them anymore. I haven't use smoke because I want to fishish think fast flash (my only think fast left) just to do it. Dying by having a grenade thump your head is just funny. now i work headshots or having fun. Starting out, I was 1:1 on kill rations. Now i am pretty steady on 3:1. Though I do drop, especially if I join a game in the middle. |

With three well organized teammates, you should be able to advance under smoke up one side to the bridge or forecastle. Figure a 1.5/1 kill ratio, you'd have to run into four aware opponents on that one side to fail, and that shouldn't happen too often. Stage on your side of the enemy's overlook thing, and pop smoke just past it when ready to conceal your advance from their middle and opposite flank. |
