waiting for the zombies to come out from the gutter ----------------------------------------------------- /O.CON.KSGX.HW.W.0002.000000T0000Z-080105T2200Z/ SOUTHWEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 30 TO 50 MPH TONIGHT WITH DAMAGING GUSTS TO 70 MPH THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. BROKEN TREE LIMBS AND DOWNED POWER LINES ARE POSSIBLE. WINDS THIS STRONG WILL MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR MOTORISTS WITH HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. A HIGH WIND WARNING MEANS A HAZARDOUS HIGH WIND EVENT IS EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF AT LEAST 40 MPH OR GUSTS OF 58 MPH OR MORE CAN LEAD TO PROPERTY DAMAGE. |

Slideshow Lot of property damage. A lot of people lost their homes. |
Actually, this is not a 'coastal storm'. The winds have been coming from the N ~ NW and the wind chill is cold. Only damage here has been a big pile of branches from both my trees in the front yard, that needed to be thinned out anyways, and a couple of car covers that blew off and ended up in puddles. But, I have seen a lot of trees, fences and patio covers down all over the area. |
pffft. This is just an average weekend in some places. We've had that a few times in the last year in Iowa. |
|
I don't know. I grew up in Michigan where the weather regularly killed people. Out here in Kal, the stupidity kills people. Yeah, sure, it was windy and rainy today. Some water in the roads, some limbs down. Yawn. Drive slower in the rain, trim the dead branches in the summer so they don't fall in the winter, whatever. But awareness is zero. I went down to the harbor jetty to watch the waves (12+ feet) and saw this young couple hanging out at the end where big waves just wash over from time to time. They had no clue. They were mashing and not even watching the ocean. I literally think they had no idea that an even slightly larger than average wave could have smacked them off. Lake Tahoe is supposed to get a bit of wind though. 70mph in town and 150mph on the ridgetops! That's pretty windy! |
This is just the 'first' storm of a projected three, to hit us. The 'second' storm is supposed to snow down to the 3000' foot level in the Bay Area, and the Tahoe area is expected to get ~10 feet.
|
Yeah, historically Donner pass gets a lot of snow. So if you are traveling there, be sure and travel with friends!

Roads flooded in Redwood City this morning and we closed the office at noon today to allow everyone a chance to get home before the water came up much further. Our parking lot is a couple feet higher than the street so all our cars were OK, same can't be said for our neighbors in other buildings who ended up with a lot of flooded cars. Got home, no damage, just a lot of water in the yard. I've seen it worse here, but not by much. Tomorrow promises to be an interesting day. -Gator |
I always laugh at that...would my '65 Belvedere be considered "high profile"? It does have 500hp yes, I do know what they mean....
|
And chains. But really, in my experience living there, they close the pass with that kind of snow. |
| I drove up to South Lake Tahoe this morning from the bay area and stayed just ahead of the storm. Now it's a friggin blizzard with white out conditions, I couldn't leave here even if I wanted to. Luckily I brought plenty of money and plenty of wine to sit out the storm. |
Our cabin is right off 50 on lakeview where 50 basically runs into the lake. I was going to go up there for a few days and drop money at the hold'em table at Harrah's like usual but I didn't want to get stuck. Have a good time! |
Friends with good taste or friends that taste good? |

I just had to drive through that yesterday. From Monterey to Huntington Beach. Visability on the 101 was so bad I had to take back roads where the hills protected me from the wind and there were no semis blinding everyone with their rooster tails. Made it a pretty trip from San Luis Obisbo to Solvang. Chickened out about going over 154 and got back on 101 to go from Buellton to Santa Barbara. That was a interesting leg due to the wind. Waited for two hours in Santa Barbara so as not to hit rush hour passing through LA, caught back up to the storm again in Ventura. It was like a monsoon at the Getty Center on the 405 at 7:30. Including 3 long stops I still made it from Monterey to HB in 14 hours. |
Forget the hot chicks. The vast majority of cali hot chicks I have known are liberal bitches who have no place in post apocolyptic America. ![]() -Ben |
Nah, 6.5mm, say around 144gr. 6.5 Grendel! (I can't afford it anyway ETA: Merced got rain pretty much all day yesterday, and pretty good winds to boot. More wind today, but I haven't noticed any real rain. It's still predicted to rain today and tomorrow, though. Hmm, I should go pick my oranges from the backyard tree 'fore they fall off and split open on the ground. |
Damn, that's a crazy drive in this weather. There was talk of 150 mph gusts in the Sierra Friday. As far as the rain, we had worse storms in 82 and 84, IIRC. Massive flooding back then. My wife's cousin bought a house in Palo Alto several years ago that flooded back in the 82 storm. The owner was so sick of it, that he sold it. The wife's cousin thought they got a deal at $700k, and invested another couple of hundred thousand in it in upgrades. Now they're probably shaking in their boots. Hell, they had a flood in his apt parking garage about 7 years ago that flooded his Porsche. The guy is Palo Alto happy. ![]() |

I am in San Gabriel Valley(10 mile east of L.A.) here, at 245PST, it has stopped raining here and is high and dry, but the next storm is supposed to hit us later tonight. I hope this gets us out of the drought, but I don't know. Even though it has rained hard in So. Calif, we get most of our water from No. Calif. It might rain like a "son of bitch" in So. Calif, but it won't get us out of the drought because we have no infrastructure to capture all of that water. It just runs off into the ocean. |
