I picked one up today, used in very good condition for $400...  who has one, what do you think?  Are the Kurt's Kustom mods worth getting?

What, you've never seen a pic of one before?  Its short, ugly and black... (insert offensive joke here) just like Gary Coleman!

I had a M17 at one time and while I liked it, I think Kurt's modifications are not just worth getting.....they're mandatory. Minimally, the trigger needs work to make it as good as it can be and you need some functional fixed sights.

Bushmaster really needs to update the platform.

I've actually had a couple of failures to feed, and damned if I know why. There aren't really all that many moving parts in the thing that need lubing or cleaning, which is odd.

When I finally get around to finding/making a box that I can use to ship the upper half to Kurt, I'll be firing it off, but I'm not sure I'm happy at what I'm hearing about the turnaround times.

One mod I won't be getting is the shortening option. Just runs completely contrary to the point of a bullpup, IMO. However, I'm certainly not happy with the factory's default rail being so high above the cheek-line so that'll be first to go.

Kurt's mods are definitely worth it.  I wouldn't shorten the barrel, personally - because I like the 21.5" inches - but replacing the shitty handle, a better rail and some optics, and you've got a kick-ass rifle!

I like mine a lot, but it can be a little finicky when it comes to mags.  Thermold are best, in my opinion, but USGI are fine too.  (Doesn't like the british mags so much).

I concur about not shortening the barrel.  The idea was to have a full length barrel for the 5.56 in a compact package.

Right now I'm thinking about the lightning cuts and the rail and maybe some trigger work.

Yeah - with a 21.5" barrel in a package shorter than an M4, and a clean piston-based gas system (and an indestructible receiver) - for $400.

Yeech !!

All black guns are - didn't you know?

The more hideous the better!!  The new FN p2000 is so ugly, it's a thing of beauty!

Form follows function... and at the price of a beater AK!  That has a beauty all its own!

My friend bought one a couple years back.  The sighting is nearly impossible, and it just doesn't feel... right.
It's unique enough, though.  The trigger is pretty terrible, even in comparison to standard Bushmaster, so I'd update that.

If I could ever find one for $400, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Anybody got one for sale?
Anyway- good deal. We need a range report/dinner pics/draw down incident.

I somehow doubt I'll have a draw down incident to share.  Looks like it will be packed up and sent to Kurt's.  So far it is looking like lightning cuts, trigger job, remove carry handle and install top rail and charging handle.  Not sure about sights, was planning on installing some type of reflex and mainly using this for plinking.  Irons aren't really an issue and this would not be my go to rifle in case of an emergency.

$400 is a good deal.  They're nifty and accurate.  Kurt's mods sound good.  Keep an eye out for feeding problems.  I've seen an M17s which tended to end up with rounds rattling around in the receiver - bushmaster fixed the problem.

The stock is soo ugly though. Can kurt make L85-style stocks for it? That would help.

Drum mags? Does that interfere with your arms and ribs?

i just got mine used with the full KKF job.  the top rail is WAY out of spec.  posted a thread in KKF forum about it.  everything rattles by at least half a mm.

ARMS, YHM and DPMS buis are a no fit.

Bottom rail is perfect.

Before going to KKF.Check the posts there. Some people have waited 8 months, even a year before getting their M17 back.

he does good work but is slow. I had him add an A2 muzzle break to my AR and turn HBAR down to A2 and it took like 3 months. Quality job for good price, though.
