Hope i`m posting in the right forum. I need your thoughts. I have a Bushmaster with a fixed carry handle. Guy at a local gunshop offered to install a new flat top upper with rail so I can mount a scope on it. The new upper installed will be $180.00. Then I would have to buy a scope. I already have around $1000.00 in the gun. Thoughts please.

That price is probably about average for an upper receiver including installation, but for what you're paying him in labor, you could easily buy a vice block and the tools to do it yourself. It probably won't save you any money this time, but for any future builds, you'll be money ahead.

It's up to you to decide if it's worth the investment or not. Personally, all my ARs have flat top upper receivers. It's a lot easier to add a carry handle to them than remove one from a fixed handle upper....

If the price includes the new Bushwacker upper than yes it's not that bad.
If he is charging you that price just for labor to install... Then you are getting the bone. With the proper tools it's no more than a 10 minute job.

If money isn't an issue, I'd just buy another AR.

You already have $1000 in a $700-800 gun.

Just build a second rifle.
That spare upper laying around WILL magically transform into one, eventually.

I did the same thing a few years ago.

I paid $90 for a new flattop upper.
Local store installed it for $40.
Then I sold my Carry Handle upper for $100.

Thanks for the input. I was mainly wondering about the price he gave me.

Yes go ahead. Keep the a2 upper for a future build

Was he keeping the old upper or giving it back to you?
If you're keeping the A2 upper then it's a fair price.
