Sounds like just what we need. NOT! I see thousands of decent gun owners going to jail or fined, and worse, losing their right to own a firearm. I've already heard horror stories from VA's Project Exile. Now Bush wants to implement the same thing nation wide, and hire all these new prosocuters specifiaclly for gun crimes? This ain't good. Captioned "Project Safe Neighborhoods" (PSN), it calls for an expansion of federal authority and spending under the guise of waging war on gun-related crime. PSN is largely an expanded version of the 1997 Project Exile program that originated in Richmond, Virginia. Long favored by the National Rifle Association, Project Exile utilizes federal laws and resources to prosecute local gun-related crimes, and is predicated on the perilous assumption that existing gun control laws should be stringently enforced. PSN calls for the expenditure of more than $550 million over two years, including (in fiscal 2001): $15.3 million for 113 new Assistant United States Attorneys to serve as full-time gun prosecutors; $75 million to fund approximately 600 new state and local gun prosecutors; $44 million to upgrade state criminal record keeping; $41.3 million to expand the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms’ Integrated Violence Reduction Strategy; $28.8 million to expand and integrate FBI and ATF computerized ballistics technology; $19.1 million to expand ATF’s Youth Crime Gun Interdiction Initiative; and technical assistance and support to assist U.S. Attorneys in developing community outreach "toolkits." The administration’s fiscal 2002 budget would add: $20 million for new state prosecutors and community task forces to combat juvenile gun crime; $9.0 million for 94 new Assistant U.S. Attorneys to focus on school gun violence and juvenile gun offenses. $50 million in grants to enable states to hire new gun prosecutors and conduct community outreach and other gun violence reduction activities; $75 million in matching grants to states for handgun trigger locks; and $35 million in grants for improving state criminal record keeping. The president also reaffirmed his support for a requirement that non-dealers conduct "instant" background checks for private sales at gun shows, and for a ban on the importation of ammunition clips capable of holding more than 10 rounds. When announcing Project Safe Neighborhoods, Bush cited a litany of statistics dear to the hearts of gun control lobbyists, such as: "Nationally, there were 12,658 murders in 1999, two-thirds of which were shooting deaths"; and "In America today, a teenager is more likely to die from a gunshot than from all natural causes of death combined." In a revealing omission, he completely ignored the estimated 2.5 million incidents each year in which guns are utilized as self-defense rescue tools by peaceful Americans. |

Hold it, Virginia is pro-gun, has a shall issue CCW law, has a Republican Governor who supports the Second Amendment, has Instant Check for gun purchases. And all Project Exile does, at least here in Va. is come down hard on Felons. Not bad as far as I'm concerned. Of course when the Federales try to copy it they will screw it up trying but that's them, not us here in Virginia. [:D] |

One was a man that went and bought a shotgun for his son's 25th birthday. Waited 72 hours for the background check, and when nothing ever came back the dealer sold it to him. A few days later the ATF shows up and arrested him and took every gun in the house. Why? He had a felony. Oh my god! What was his felony? Indecent exposure. He mooned the dean of his college back in the 60's and was charged with indecent exposure, a felony in the state he did it in. The problem here is, different things can be felonies in different states. What might be a misdemenor in one state could be a felony in another. |

I agree that the crack-down needs to come in the area of punishments for people who use guns in crimes, NOT on people who just purchase a gun. |

I've seen people at ranges with folding stocks on SKS's with the pistol grip, bayonet and hi cap mags. I believe that's four of the five evil features, only allowed two. When I told one guy it probably wasn't legit, he didn't believe me. Saw him about 6 months later, he had put the original stock back on and thanked me for alerting him. Also imagine getting pulled over in an area where a robbery has occurred and the police officer sees all your ammo and gun cases in the back. In some states I believe your not allowed to transport your firearms and ammo in the same compartment. How many times have you driven to the range with loaded mags in the pouches of a nylon zip up case? Ever try to use a 2 liter coke bottle as a suppressor? I've always wanted to, but so far have resisted the urge. Don't recommend anyone else trying it either, the urge to tell someone you did would be to great. Ever carry concealed into a place that serves alcohol on the premise? Ever put a pre-ban upper on a post ban lower? No? Got one stored in the safe with a post ban? I've got a pre-ban upper, but not really knowing what the law is on this and not willing to accept other peoples word for it or wanting to call the ATF to find out, it stays at my father's house until I decide to weld and pin the muzzle break or find a pre-ban lower for it. Ever let a known dope smoker ride in your car? If you get pulled over for some reason... I know alot of this may not constitute a felony every where, even in the state I live in, but it's something to think about. |

Ok I live in the PRNJ, we were looking forward to instantcheck. Seems we wait 6 to 12 months for a permit in places. Or they just don't bother doing it so you go away. It would be nice if it was uniform laws accross the country. But not based on our laws. Civillians can't carry here. We are severly restricted as to what we can own or shoot. As a cop I see too many of those that are arrested time and time again, they get illegal guns as soon as they are out. We do need to start putting them away, forever. That works! We need to educate the lawmakers. Most of them do not know about the shooting sports. They see a limited value in it. Oh Diane Fienstein does, she has a permit to carry for herself. |

A firearm is a firearm and EVERYONE is guaranteed the right to own WHATEVER firearm they want by the constitution!! Who the hell cares about the “shooting sports”? I sure don’t! No where in the constitution does it say “for sporting purposes” or “shooting sports”. If you want to live in a fascist state then you can move to … oh wait a minute, you already do! It is thoughts and beliefs like yours why I moved out of PRNJ! Cops are supposed to uphold the constitution as it was written. Not make their own PC interpretations about it and uphold them. Again, another part of the problem…. |

The 2nd Amendment is not about "shooting sports". It's about protecting ourseleves from tyranny. I've sat here several minutes trying figure out a way not to say what I want to say and not piss you off, but can't. So here it is. It's about being able to protect ourselves from people who have mindsets like yours. [b]Put them away forever![/b] Good grief. |
