| I have never really looked into this but I see you guys talking about it all the time. How much, how hard and are there any good resources out there. I would like to build an M4forgery if it is not to difficult. |

One of the greatest pleasures is building your own. It's not hard if you have the correct tools, and most of them are just to make the job easier. A lot of good publications out there, many listed on the home page right here. Also the AR15 site people will help you with any questions. Go 4 it! |

The most advanced tools that you need are a torque wrench and vise jaws (or an upper receiver block). And that's only if you're going to be barreling a stripped upper. I put my Cav lower together in about an hour, with nothing more than a Swiss Army knife [BD] The only thing that I'd call hard is torquing the barrel to the upper, should you decide to got that route. I got all the info that I needed from the build it yourself board here, the "information" links on the front page here, and the $3 Colt armorer's manual from the local surplus store. It's a very worthwhile experience, and will teach you everything you'll need to know about function and maintenance. |

Stripped lower+J&T/DPMS= Great rifle. The parts kits already have the upper built so all you have to do is install lower parts. The best thing about building your own is you know actually know how the fuck your rifle works! No longer will you be a Nancy Boy that post stupid questions about why their baby AR15 won't shoot. You will know your rifle...intimately. You will be personnally test fitting, installing, and fondling even ever single part. You will know your rifle better than your right hand...and you will be a proud AR15 owner!!!! Sgtar15 |

Absolutely right-on! Instead of looking at your rifle like some sorta mystery machine, you will understand the genius of the AR15 system. A much superior benny than saving bucks. Though its hard to argue with saving $100-$150 bucks on a custom-built AR. |

It's WAAAY easier than you think guy :) I just got done walking 9 guys through their lower builds (We did a group buy of kits and stripped recievers) and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM was intimidated by the prospect because, as they put it "I'm not mechanically inclined". After the 30 min's or so it took to finish the things they all wanted to charge the other guys to build THEIRS! lol This site has a terrific and easy to follow "Build it yourself" guide that you can print off for free. As the other guys have said, you pretty much will need a few cheap punches (I'm talking like a $5 Harbor frieght set here) and access to a vice OR a buddy with steady hands. One thing I'll mention that I always do on my builds is using electrical tape to protect the left side of the reciever when you're putting in the bolt-catch roll pin. I go at least three layers thick and I've nailed the reciever a few good ones over the years and never left a mark on any of them. The tape comes off clean too so you're not spending time cleaning sticky crap off it (It doesn't leave any residue actually). Good luck and trust me, after your first build you're gonna do the "V-8" slap-to-the-head it's that easy :) |

But [red]BEWARE![/red], they're just like "Lays Potato Chips", (nobody can [s]eat[/s] build just one.[;)]) |

Even a cop could do it! Seriously sherrik, its easy. If you can build a plastic model, you can assemble a lower. If you can change spark plugs, you can barrel an upper. Thats all the talent you need. You do need a few tools though, but the tasks are rudely simple. I assembled my first lower while watching TV in 40 minutes. Of course I have a vice on my coffee table. Well, since the divorce. |
