How short would a 22 AR with a 14.5 barrel and pinned flash hider appear to be compared to a normal 5.56 SBR?
My 16 in CMMG 22 is the same length as my 14.5 5.56 with pinned flash hider.
If I had the barrel cut to 14.5 and pinned a flash hider to make 16, would it appear to be a standard 12.5-13 in AR?

Not sure what you are asking...you'd save just the length of the flash hider.

My 14.5 pinned 556 barrel is just about 1.25" shorter than my 16"s after the 51T flash hider is put on.

the 22 barrel is already set back into the action 1.5 inches.
I guess I'm asking if anyone has done it and if it's worth doing?

The only way it would look like one is if you chapped the barrel down pretty far and put on a fake suppressor or something along the lines of that.

This is the 22lr AR I built for my wife. It is a 16" barrel with Spikes fake can that slips over the barrel.

She gets a lot of jealous looks from people at the range thinking she has a suppressed SBR.

Yeah, that looks pretty nice.   Probably worth the effort.  I wonder if anyone has chopped one down and F1'd it...that'd be really interesting.

I'm trying for a look like a 12.5.
I have a couple SBRs but want more of a toy that I don't have to worry about.
It'll free up one of my SBR lowers and still look close.

You might ask Heat&beat. He did a xm177e2 for me with a .22 barrel and it is pretty short because of the setback when compared to a regular 16" XM177e2. I posted pics last year but it generated little or no interest.

I just checked. It is roughly 1 1/4"shorter than the 16" pinned XM177e2 and roughly 1 1/8"  between the grenade ring and the fsb. I used Bricks stuff

I can email you a pick if you like.

Sig's 522 has a setup with a fake can, as posted above. It slips over most of the exposed barrel and makes it look like an SBR with a can.

just get a full 16in bbl and get a slip over fake can for it.
looks like an SBR with a  real can, and sounds about like it because you are shooting .22lr

Here's mine.  16 inch barrel, which is about the same length as a 14.5 (5.56 version), with a fake Spike's can.  I also have a 12 inch rail.  I went with the fake can, because it was easier to remove, than the flashider, when I do use my buddies real can, or for when I finally get mine.

Just remember that if you are using a removable .22 conversion unit in a 5.56 barreled upper then you are still building an unregistered SBR if you go this route unless you also have a Registered SBR lower or Pistol lower.

can i take a M&P 15-22, remove the flash suppressor, and put on a spikes tactical fake can without hitting any legal snafu's?

Mine was built with a dedicated .22 barrel. I thought that's what he originally asked.

I guess I need to include drawings and subtext.

It will be a 22 upper not a conversion unit.
It's more of a toy/replica of one of my SBRs so I don't have to worry when I'm out at the range goofing off.
I am thinking of pin and welding a flash hider to a 14.5+/- 22 barrel (16 in for ATF purposes) to achieve a 12.5-13 in SBR look.
Fake suppressors on a 16
If I'm having the extra weight I'll use a real one, which means I have to take the damn thing to the can with me if I need to go, so I might as well use a real SBR too, back to square one.
Anything else I need to explain for the clueless??

sorry, just think if you are trying to build a fake SBR, a short bbl with a long ass FH to make 16in looks kinda gay...
I think the slip over fake can give its a better look and you still get the 16in MV. and they dont weight anything anyway.
