Ok all these computer related topics have got me going now. I want to know how I would intergrate a Linux box in to my network and route my Internet traffic through it to use as my firewall. Right now I have a Netgear FVS318 Router/Firewall and a Wireless AP for my Sony PSP and Laptop. Is it pretty simple to do this? If so I'm thinking about driving around the neighborhood and finding a computer that someone thrown out tonight. |
| I have done this a long time ago. Its not to hard to setup if you know your way around computers. BUT when something goes wrong you better known linux pretty well. And I don't mean using it with the GUI interface. ALso what Linux are you thinking of using? Mandrake is probally the easiest to start with. |

Smoothwall is probably the easiest to use linux firewall I have come across. Both to install and use. www.smoothwall.org Stick a couple nic's in a old box and you'll be rolling in no time. This is not a actual full install of linux. It is strictly a firewall. |
I know Linux farely well, and can operate it without a GUI. |
Fantastic solution, thank you much! I didn't want to sit through a huge install picking which packages to install and not install for a machine that will operate only as a firewall. |
I've been using smoothwall for years with great success. I keep a keep a keyboard connected to it but other than that its headless. |
Been using it for years in and been very pleased with it as well. |
Then you should have no problems. |
Does it have a SSH Package? I just want to find an old Pizza Box PC and stick it on the top of my rack and forget about it. |
Yup it does.. But you need to turn it on.. i have uses it for many years in a business environment and it works awesome! it got replaced with a cisco pix per corp request.. |
Don't know yet, but maybe you can tell me where to get SB5100 Firmware upgrades
|
im using a 4100 :) they are really cheap on ebay. worth its weight in gold. running SB4100-0.4.4.5-SCM01-NOSH-2.03 |
To clone a MAC in Smoothwall: edit the file /etc/rc.d/rc.netaddress.up after the two lines : if [ "$CONFIG_TYPE" = "2" -o "$CONFIG_TYPE" = "3" ]; thenAdd this line: ifconfig $RED_DEV hw ether 00:01:02:03:04:05 |

Well I'm not having much luck here. Everytime I try to install it goes through a few prompts, tells me it wants to partition the drive, I tell it ok then it says Unable to Create File system or something very similar I've tried two HD's both known to be good. Any ideas? |

Clark Connect has worked very well for me. It not only can act as a fireway/gatway/router but also includes very helpful features such as VPN, web/mail/ database server, windows file sharing, CUPS, etc. Another great feature is completely web-based administration, you can be completely unfamiliar with linux and this will be a cinch to set up. www.clarkconnect.com |

Mine has been running for years with no problem. I took an old P2 system - nice, because no CPU fan - unplugged the hard drive and its pretty quiet. I boot from a cd containing Devil Linux. The config is held on a write protected floppy. Devil Linux comes with its own firewall setup -- I replaced that with a irewall I was a bit more familiar with, but both are based on IPTables. The only thing I had to add was a second NIC - cost all of $20. If the system had been slightly newer, I could have had it booting from a USB drive, then I could have thrown out the CD and Floppy drives, and had no moving parts at all. Works very well. I set up logging to an internal Linux system, and its amazing how much crap that firewall starts, and how many penetration attempts originate from China! |

I have to tell you this Smoothwall is a pile of garbage. I've tried 3 diffrent versions and can not get any of them to install. Smoothwall 2.0 Express: Can't repartition the Hard Drive Smoothwall 3.0 Grizzy (Alpha): Finds Hard Drive, yet crashes when it asks me if I want to restore settings from a floppy. Smoothwall 3.0 Corporate: Same as above |
I wouldn't try smooth wall unless you want to look like this all night ETA: Adding wireless would be a piece of cake, if you get it running. No diffrent then any other typical Wifi setup. Do you use a WAP or Wireless Router? |
|
Meta: I've installed countless Smoothwalls, you've got some sort of a problem; and it isn't SWE. FWIW Version 3.0 Corporate Requires a key. What hardware are you running? I can point you to the pre-patched ISO, which for some people seems to work better. The installer is identical, it just has all of the kernel/application updates put onto the image. The Pre-patched ISO is available Here |
Well it was a hardware issue believe it or not. Smoothwall didn't like my USB Keyboard about halfway through the install. When I used a PS2 keyboard that fixed my issues. |
| I have an old computer that I just tossed a couple NICs in and installed IPCop. It works great. |
