So I'm going to be building a PC to play DayZ on and various other games that my current computer cannot tolerate.
Anyone have advice on which OS to go with. I currently use Windows 7 and am not sure if 8 is retarded or not? |

Win 7 pro 64bit is where it's at for the immediate future.
Win 8 is VERY different, not just in terms of the interface but in terms of what's underneath. The 3rd party stuff is not ready for it. Anti-virus, backup software, drivers... lots of stuff just isn't there yet. |

Quoted: As someone who works on machines for a living. Go win 7 64, Fuck windows 8 As someone who plays on them for a living, get 8. Sure, the interface sucks. (It SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS) Yes, the shortcut keys suck even more. The OS is solid and Steam works just fine. It took me a week to get used to it as a gamer. The only major issue is the automatic update killed the entire OS when I rebuilt and added a 690. Either will do you fine and with 7 you can always upgrade. So, if you are totally on the fence, just buy an OEM copy of 7 and upgrade later. The truth is that once DayZ or Steam is running, you don't notice the OS. Both are plenty stable for a gaming rig. |

There are two laptops in this house. One has windows 7 pro 64-bit. The other has Windows 8.
I can barely use the Windows 8 one. I've tried. It just doesn't make any damn sense. When I want to do something on it, I first get on the windows 7 one and google how to do it. I wish I was making this up. In before someone calls me retarded. |

Quoted: I'm going to but upgrading to Win 8 probably next week. I'd go with 8. Everything I've read says that most games can get about a 10-15% performance bump with Win 8 alone. Edit: Also, you know you can use the standard desktop with 8 right? On a gaming rig, I just leave Steam running in "big mode" with a 360 controller plugged in most of the time. Win 8 is just the background. If you are working enterprise, the interface would be a different story. It's really does just take a week or a decent cheat sheet to figure out the shortcuts. It's like switching to Apple. Give yourself a week and you should be competent enough to use the system fluidly. They did mess around with Admin accounts and recovery disks. You need to add your admin after the install if you ever really want to repair or fix something in safe mode. Not a big deal until you figure it out after a crash. |

I cant figure it out either. Win7 64-bit is where its at. MPD165 |

So you guys who work on computers every day never work on servers? Server 2012 looks the same as windows 8. Not that this has anything to do with this post. When I left the data center 2 years ago there wasn't but 3 out of a few thousand boxes that ran Server 2008. I would be shocked to see 2012 used in any large number. |

If I were building myself I would go with Windows 7 for a gaming rig. I actually like Windows 8 a lot, but when dealing with gaming there are enough nit picky little problems to deal with involving drivers and compatibility issues, adding a new OS to the mix isn't going to help. If it were a more mundane daily use kind of rig I would say go with 8, remember that the home screen is the start menu, and in a week or two realize that it is a pretty good OS. ETA: I have been using 8 for a year now, and didn't like it at first, but it really grew on me. I run it on the computer I am using now, and earlier this evening ordered my wife an Alienware X51 (less than $500 after tax and shipping, no you can't build a similar i5 based rig for that), that comes with 8, she isn't a gamer but our youngest son will use it for occasional gaming. I will be keeping an eye on how it runs. |

Quoted: I am still in the dark ages with XP but it still works great so why change, I also enjoy win 7 64bit that is on my laptop, but some of my very old games have compatibility issues, but again they were designed for 98 and NT. You shouldn't under 7. Just pick the properly compatible mode. Honestly, you should have less issues with older games under 7 than you did under XP. |

7, 64 bit, pro...or ultimate if you run a multi-processor machine. (Ultimate is required for multi-processor machines. Other versions won't use the second processor.) 8 is intended for touch screens and tablets. Don't give it any consideration unless you're building a touch screen based PC. Even then, 8 is simply ugly and sucks. CJ |

I currently use Windows 7 and am not sure if 8 is retarded or not? I'm building and upgrading around here and I've decided to stick with 7 for probably another year. Overall, I'm really happy with 7. There isn't anything that makes me want to move away, nor anything drawing me to 8. I suspect that 8 is a bad OS because its an "every other" OS, like those that came before, and I figure... best wait till 9. Until something really compels me, but I can't forsee anything in the next year that'll do that. |

And just like Win8 if you right click where the start button used to be on the desktop there's every option needed to make changes. It's all right there. Server2012 works well so far from my experience with it. Task manager in Win8/server2012 owns also. |
