I've been wanting to build one of these for awhile, modeled after a large retail display piece we put together a few years back.  The upcoming Cola Warrior SE was the push I needed to build a few boxes, as I'm going to donate this first one to the CW cause.

This is the piece I designed/built in 2015 for a custom clothing store and it stands as the inspiration for a line of gun boxes I'm working on.

Attachment Attached File

This will be the prize for prettiest pistol used at CWSE2 and the second will go to the Ranstad Raffle!

Update-Done pic:

This build will have external dimensions of 12"x8"x3.5" and will house one full sized pistol and a few mags.  It is getting a 1/8" thick piece of tempered glass embedded in the top and features a solid steel and dark walnut construction.  Without further ado, the materials...

1/4" steel cut to size and dark walnut

Time to weld her up...  Did I mention this thing is going to be solid?

Here I shaped the walnut to lay inside the steel, but be nearly flush with the outer edge of the box.

Test fitting a mitered piece

Box is glued up independently of the metal and will slip in neatly and snugly.

Metal is painted and the box is getting sanded down and prepped for an oil finish

Because I'm impatient and just love seeing the oil rubbed in to protect and purdy up the hard work that went into this:

Here, I am chiseling out the space for the hinge to lay into.  I am using some 95* stop hinges so the box lid will lay open when needed

Aaaand that's all I have for now.  Today my glass should be ready and I can go pick up a box of glass to put these bad boys on the done list.

Alright on to the lid:

I stripped out some 3/4" x 3/4" walnut and put a 1/4" deep notch in throughout for the glass to snug into

Test fit of the first mitered piece

And the other pieces are done.  Hoping glass is ready so I can pick it up this afternoon

Thanks man.  I, too, cannot wait to see the progress lol.  I've had this display case in my mind for years and am now just waiting on one thing to be able to assemble it.

I get really impatient when I have to wait on one thing for a project

Buuut I went ahead and ordered the velvet for the inside of the boxes.  The felt in the pictures is just some scrap that I had laying around; the velvet has a far superior appearance and texture.  I'll use the felt for the bottoms of the boxes, but the insides will be silky smooth

Alright so I picked up a box of glass today and man it sets these things off.

Now I'm going to joint, sand and lay the hinges in the top and put it all together.  Should be done this afternoon.

If a feller wanted one of those, how much?

I may or may not have a few or a dozen or no military pistols that I would like to display on a rotational basis.

I'll be joining you shortly sir!

I'm almost done running errands and then I have a 10:30PM meeting where I'll be taking an Uber there and back. Bar owners like to get people drunk on weeknights,

Thanks man, we got approval to donate one to the Ranstad Raffle as well and it'll be listed as one of the raffle prizes.

I wish I had a nicer full size handgun to place in it for some pictures

Anybody in GA want to play a game of pool, drink a beer and bring a pretty 1911 over?

Niiiiice.

Build one big enough for an SBR with a can?

Then put a lock on it, so it passes the "kid test."

Can do

I've actually looked into bullet proof glass to make a "viewable safe" of sorts but man that stuff is EXPENSIVE!!

I figured for one that couldn't just be smashed and grabbed I could build the lid out of metal and wood with a cross hatch of sorts.  That way it's visible and cool, but the weapons wouldn't be removable.

I want to do a couple "break in case of emergency" boxes as well, maybe with some inset lighting, etc.

Time for fun projects is hard to come by right now, but our goal is a shop expansion soonish, and to hire more help.  I have always said that I won't pay myself until I have 5 people on the payroll. Just 1 more to go and I can stop fixing cars on the weekends

I miss the days where you kept all your guns in a glass and oak "gun cabinet" in the study, and the kids knew not to touch them without permission.

Do that now, and you'll have an angry mob of parents declaring your home "unsafe."
