The Brits are freaking out because "OH MY GOD!"  250 Secret Service agents will be carrying "OH MY GOD!" guns!!!  Please! They should realize the safest day London will have had in 10 years will be the day 250 AMERICAN Secret Service agents are carrying "OH MY GOD!" guns in London.

To be honest I think the Secret Service did go a *wee bit* overboard with their requests.

They wanted Blackhawk's and US fighters to do Combat Air Patrols over London.  They wanted the ENTIRE Metro London tube shut down while the President is there.

We also asked to have mini-guns brought over for the protective detail.

While I agree that GW *is* a big target I think that someone got a litle carried away this time with the SHTF/TEOTWAWKI scenario (or were going for trying to scare the shit of any bad guys that may be planning something).

The emasculation of the British should serve as constant reminder of what could be in store for us. The concept of the armed citizen as we understand it really originated there with the English Yoeman archers of days gone by. The Second Amendment codified what the Founding Fathers understood as a God-given right that was traditionally recognized in English Common Law.Without a specific, written Costitutional defense of this right, this once proud armed citizenry has been reduced to the sniveling state of hoplophobic subjects.

The pic above speaks volumes. When I was in London, I went to the Old Bailey and found it surrounded by cops in flak vests w/MP5s in their hands. I asked one what was up with the machine guns. He said (rolling his eyes) "It's the Central Criminal Court, mate." I said "Oh. Where I come from, half the people on the street carry pistols, but the police don't walk around w/machine guns. I thought you were under attack or something." "Nope, mate. Routine." And, in fact, none of the Brits on the street gave them a second look.

Their squeals about Secret Svc guys w/guns are disingenuous.

Considering that Britain has as many active Al Queida members as Saudi Arabia, Afganistan and Pakistan combined, might not be a bad idea.
Just throwing it out there.
God, they need a Churchill again.

I find that, even as a gun guy, bizarre beyond belief. Okay, I can fully understand the cops having automatic weapons around a courthouse when they have a really bad guy in custody, or in a city under a threat (see NY after 9/11 or any major event afterwards), that makes sense. But to just have guys toting MP5s around malls, courts, streets, well that sounds like a police state to me.

How the Brits got to this sorry state.  Should be required reading for all Americans.  All gun owners should have this bookmarked/printed so you can use it next time someone asks "What's the big deal about banning guns and why should I worry about it?"

OK, fairs fair, the media are squealing like stuck pigs at the moment over all the "excesive" requests of the Secret Service, but there you go.

London Central Courts are I suspect the only ones to have routinely armed gaurds. Airports have armed gaurds by default now, but we dont have any officers on foot patrol armed at the moment. Except in Nottingham where they deployed Walther P99's to one _particularly_ troubled estate. Thats it for the moment, AFAIK...

All other arms are either kept in the station, or in Armed Response Vehicles.

I figure the SS asked for more than they thought they would actually get:

PS. If it wasnt for the fact that nobody is allowed within 100 yards of the president, I'd be down in london tonight/tomorrow with a US flag, protesting in SUPPORT of GWB.

So there.

I think the main way the Secret Service gathers intelligence is thru surfing the internet boards like AR15.COM etc.... Just joking!

I heard that a few years ago in No. Calif.(San Jose?) that the city was going to pass an anti-gun law and that they were going to have a lot of "gun nuts" showing up to protest, the city council actually put up more Sheriff's deputy on security because of chatter on the various internet forums.

I dont think the Secret Service is overreacting by all that much.  Guess what city is world headquarters for al-Qaeda and its sympathizers in the West, perhaps in the world?

London, in good old Blighty. More muslim whackos than you can shake a stick at in London. And George Bush is coming for a visit.

They aren't even "machine guns"...the  rifles the Brit police are issued  are only semi-autos for the most part.......no select fire, for the most part.

Unfortunately, I think we are headed down the same road as Britain. We too are becoming a nation of cowards. We too are increasingly looking to the govt. to take full care of us. Its sad but true.

The brits would've loved a guy like GWB to be in office during ww2.

FDR waited until Germany was bombing the tar out of Jolly ole England. GWB would've smacked the Nazi war machine silly as soon as they reached the outer limits of France (Ok, OK Belgium...)

They have forgotten the lessons of history, that waiting and doing NOTHING means the bad guys take over France, and bomb you silly.

Remember guys. This was reported in the Brit media who is even farther left than ours. Of course they only asked the people who answered what they wanted to hear.
I know lots of Brits who feel emasculated by the gun laws there. I love to take them shooting!

I guess I don't understand all the fuss.

But, then again, I think GWB should be allowed to roll grenades into the protesting crowds as the Presidential limo coasts by.

That's just me, I guess.

Do you guys think the liberal media is actually gonna broadcast support for GW? Hell no!! #@$$ the media. They all lie. Why we even bother to listen is hard for me to understand. The British have their anti's just like we do. They have their Michael Moore's and Rosie's too.

Their blood is spilling just like ours is over in that shithole called Iraq.

The SS does the same thing here for GWB that they are wanting to do in England. They seal the manhole covers, arm over 250 cops and Agents and they fortify their position greatly.

And equinOx, if you're ever in the States and visit Arizona, look me up. We'll go out and bust some caps and then I'll buy you a pint!

I am glad that BUSH is taking all the precautions....Its good that they have the Texas chain-saw(mini-gun) with them...why?  If anyone checked the British news as of late, there has been a string of violent shootings involving one particular rifle...the AK47.  Better safe than letting one of those greasy towel headed porcelin slide jackoffs getting a shot off at the President.

As usual, Airwolf's post is right on the money.  But one thing disturbed me when I read the article Airwolf posted a link to.  Here is the section
"Rather than permit individuals more scope to defend themselves, Prime Minister Tony Blair’s government plans to combat crime by extending those "restraints on personal liberty": removing the prohibition against double jeopardy so people can be tried twice for the same crime, making hearsay evidence admissible in court, and letting jurors know of a suspect’s previous crimes."

Why do we seem to love Tony Blair so much?  Is it just because he was the only European leader, other than perhaps those in Spain and Italy, with enough of a nutsack to stand by W when he wanted to Blitzkrieg Baghdad.  He gets Kudos for that, but Blair is a freakin' Socialist people!  WTF!  He operates his Gov't more like Bill Clinton in terms of having those with evidence against him killed.  This guy is not a friend of liberty!

Warlord,

Here's another example of paranoia about firearms.  Did you go to the SB23 public hearings?  At the one in LA, the DOJ had at least 25 armed cops lining the room - this after you go through the metal detector and have any possible weapon impounded.

Hey Keith184,
You're quite right, not all the Brits are sheeple.  I was at a scientific conference in Cambridge last year.  The attendees were predominently male so predictably the informal discussions eventually got around to subjects such as the RKBA, crime in Britain, etc.  I can assure you, there are a LOT of Brits who are very pissed off at their nanny labor government.  Unfortunately, these guys all got out voted!  It's a cautionary tale lest anyone believe that such things could never happen here.
