Just about ALL of it looks like a wasteland.

Not Las Vegas (NM).  You know, Calumet Colorado as in the movie Red Dawn.

How about Taos?  Rancho Chimayo?  Riodusa?  Sante Fe?

Alamogardo is nice too.

Boy ain't that the truth.  More than anything I found NM to be the most boring state in the union.

ETA:  I'm VERY surprised to see such a liberal and Hispanic govenor to be bringing this up publicly.

Not the northern part, which is very nice country.  I like the Land of Enchantment.

But it's flooded with cheap drugs because of the barely-inhabited area along the Mexican border.

Mexico said the declarations "don't jibe with the spirit of cooperation and understanding

In otherwords the declarations are in conflict with the organized crime, corruption and payoffs that are well established on both sides of the border.

I was driving across NM late one night... Albuquerque to Fruitland... after midnight...

The land of enchantment...

I started seeing things... Giant Jack Rabbits.... and there was this all Navajo station playing a Navajo chant version of the Mighty Mouse theme song....

No wait.... that shit was real.

I love NM.

So what's this SOE declaration mean, from a practical standpoint? State troops on the border? Checkpoints sealed until order is restored? Or is this just an "all bark, no bite" political move made by a potential POTUS candidate?

No, the land of New Mexico was invaded by Hispanics back in the 1700's.  And setteled.

We could solve the problem quickly in one sentence:

Volunteers of the Minuteman Project, you have the blessing of management, the governor and POTUS to fire on individuals crossing the border illegally into the United States of America.

48 Hours later... NEWS FLASH - All illegal border crossing activity from Mexico into New Mexico has ceased in the wake of Americans protecting their border... News at 11:00.

For the history impaired:

From 1836 to 1845 New Mexico was part of Texas.  Prior to 1836, it was part of the Mexican state Coahuila y Tejas.

New Mexico did not exist as an entity until the Republic of Texas joined the United States in 1845 and agreed to split that part off into another territory.

And there was no ANGLO American invasion of New Mexico.  Most settlers who came to Texas settled in a band stretching from the northeastern corner through the gulf coast.

Nice try, hombre, but you're wrong. I'm surrounded by farms. Most of my friends are farmers. Ninety percent of my clients are farmers. Perhaps it's different in New Yawk, but around here full time Mexican farm laborers make a minimum of $12 per hour, much more during harvest season. Same for casual day laborers (landscaper/carpenter/roofer/mason's helpers, et al).

New Mexico was invaded by the Spanish before the Anglos. The "Indians" were here before the Spanish invaded and took their land away. The Indians invaded and took it away from the people who were here before them too. But we will stay away from that one, it is not to PC.  (you can read America B.C.
