I have one, a Sunbeam.  Pretty sure it was a "walmart special" but it has a timer on it and works fine.  I've had it about 5 years now and use it probably 4-5 times a week with no complaints.  My only advice is to follow the order suggested in the owners guide when adding ingredients.

I  have one. West bend 1-1/2 pound loaf model.
Used it a bunch just made a loaf of sour dough myself but for my own enjoyment.
Have to be careful with the water. Too hot or too cold and it will mess up.
I had a loaf of hawaiian sweet bread that came out like pound cake.

I have one from Williams-Sonoma.  I have no idea what brand it is, but I love it.  My mother-in-law who used to have too much money for her own good bought it for me so I am pretty sure that it was in the "way too damn much" price range. BTW, the Williams-Sonoma  mixes for bread machines are awesome as well.

Bread machines don't last long.  My wife's first one quit on its 576th loaf.(seriously).

It was a 1 and 1/2 pound model (west bend).  Replaced with a 2 pound model and like it much better.  Current one is Betty Crocker brand private labeled for WallMart.  Works great, but you have to follow the directions exactly.

I've had my West Bend for about  14yrs and it still works just fine.  Definitely follow the order of ingredients, though.

I've got two boules of sourdough rising in the kitchen right now!

Sorry I can't help with the bread machine - I have one that I got for free from my long distance service or something about 13 years ago, but I never use it.  I like to use my stand mixer instead.

I was gonna ask you about how much the one from Williams-Sonoma was.  I love Williams-Sonoma stuff so much...but I haven't been able to buy anything because it's too expensive at the moment.  I take that back.  I bought a spoon rest and measuring spoons from them.  But that's it so far...

Ditto to the instructions about order of ingredients...also, after a machine died, we realized we needed to use the surge protector. Just a thought if electrical problems are common in your area.

Generally I use the Kitchen Aid stand mixer for large, regular loaves, and just hand shape. Or use a batter recipe.  Check out the recipes on Fleischman Yeasts Bread Brigade site...you can sign up for discount coupons.  And...buy yeast at a restaurant supply, MUCH cheaper.

For the last few months  we have been using the "Just for Dinner" bread machine daily. Makes a 3/4 pound loaf, in 45 min.  Works for our family of 3...the loaf looks like a big roll :) Fairly large machine though...  For sammiches or toast we slice the bread horizontally.

If I had the bucks for a regular American loaf style breadmaker, I'd choose the Zojirushi machine, since I don't care for the typical square or round loaves.

My wife just got a BreadmanUltimate because she wanted one that would make loaves that could be sliced like normal sandwich bread.  It's nice.  Fresh bread every day for about the same price as the nasty cheap white bread...   And it can be set up with the timer the night before so that the bread is ready and fresh when you wake up in the morning.

That store can become really addictive if you aren't careful!  They have all these cool "things" that I think I need and then all of a sudden, I'm completely broke.

That's the main reason why I like the Breadman Ultimate.  Normal sized sandwich bread...
