It was a new fangled radio. However, anything rare & valuable can be labeled as a "shiny thing."

I just took it to be some kind of new piece of gear that none of them thought was useful or worth hauling around so they just took to calling it the "shiny thing".

I knew the general usage it became. But if it was a new radio why did they take 4 others and why didn't they use the "shiny thing" when their other radios failed? |

It's low budget for sure (Brit production) but definitely worth the watch. Especially if you are in any way a fan of the SAS. Pretty realistic depiction of events as well. |

IIRC, they did attempt to use it without success (in the PB during the sandstorm & another time when they made chance contact with the indigenous person <the guy they asked where the market was>). And I believe they only had one. |

You remember correctly. The "shiny thing" was a Magellin GPS receiver, which came wrapped in a mylar bag. These could have a code entered into them that would allow the receiver to decode the encrypted bitstreams to allow more accurate positioning. This is called Selective Availability, and was designed to keep civilian units from being as accurate as the data available to the military. Selective Availability was shut off in May 2000, instantly making everyone's GPS receiver just as accurate as the military units. Selective Availability could be reinstated at anytime, and can be turned on in specific areas of the world. -Troy |

This is called Selective Availability
Or differential. It was possible to correct the built in error with a differential receiver that used a seperate signal to correct the position. |
