I thought it was cat food at first. What is this stuff??? It appears that my grandfather has developed quite the taste for braunschweiger pate' spread. He puts it on rye bread with.... of all things to add to a paste made from livers.... limburger cheese.
How foul is that? In this modern era, how can someone smell this stuff and not immediately want a slice of pizza? |
Put it on a Ritz...man that is some goooood stuff!!! Add a little Miracle Whip for a treat!

You gotta be kidding.
Good stuff? Ick... it smells like 9-Lives!! |
It's good stuff. Braunschweiger and cheese!!
Of course, I like peanut butter and jelly and fried banana sammiches, thank-you-very-much.. /elvis |
That's pretty close to liverwurst, isn't it? I love liverwurst, but can't stomach any other form of liver I've ever tried. Go figure. I popped a chicken liver wrapped in bacon at my wedding reception and went, "MUUMPH MUUMMMPH WRRRFFF" the rest of the night. Don't be disappointed. Organ meat is high in cholesterol, shouldn't eat much anyway.

Haha.....Arnold used that term in "Last Action Hero"
Then the kid corrected him with Schwarzenneger.....and Arnold said "Gazoontite" |
No way.... cat food. And if the liver pate isn't bad enough, limburger reminds me of what it smelled like on the school bus in kindergarten when the kid threw up his milk and it fermented in the 90 degree heat.
Nasty. Pure and simple. |
I love it. Put some on pumpernickle bread, some tillsit or havarti cheese. Good stuff.
My mom loved the stuff. She'd buy a roll all for herself. And about once a year I would brave up and eat a slice.
She's been gone for 24yrs and I haven't had it since before she got sick. And I don't miss it at all. |
+1 Good stuff. My wife hates it though. All the more for me! |
nasty shit. I used to work at a deli, everytime I cut it it grossed me out. You guys may think it tastes good, but it smells nasty and feels like catfood mixed with playdough. How about headcheese

Yum! Liverwurst!
Throw some on a kaiser roll with a bunch of mustard, and mmmm good eats! Some like it with onions... I never got into that. Plain with mustard for me. Hmm...now I want a liverwurst sandwich... |
But it tastes so good. I cant eat it though, too much colesterol |
Its not for everyone, but I love it. Some things that smell bad taste very good. |

Mmmmm…..leberwurst!
Being from a German/French background I grew up on Braunschweiger or leberwurst as the Germans call it. Didn’t taste the real deal until I joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. I ended up marrying a gal from my Dads town in Germany and both our kids were born and raised in Germany and of course raised eating leberwurst! My favorite way of eating it is spread thick on a nice slice of German Rye bread, sprinkled with a bit of salt, a lot of pepper and topped off with a side serving of sliced onion! |
A kid in 5th grade barfed his grilled cheese sandwich and to this day I can't eat american cheese unless it's melted on a cheeseburger |
My Dad and my Grandmother used to eat them occasionally. I think liverwurst is just liver and brauschweiger has a few more ingredients. And about every 10 years I get a roll for old times sake. It's coming up on 10 years now. The last time was to have the boys try it. It was ok, then I told them what it was. I think it will be 20 for them.
To put it in perspective, I've never even considered blutwurst. |
Hey, it REALLY is good stuff!
You vill learn to LOVE it, mine Kinder! |
Yum!
I like it on Rye bread. Lay out a slab on the bread. Put a slice of cheese on top. Broil that until the cheese melts. Then put a slice of raw onion on top. Then the last slice of bread. YeeHaa!!!! Or should I say "Wundervoll!" |
I LOVE Braunschweiger, Try it you just might like it
Ya, ist gutt |
Man, that is some good chit.
I want a liverwurst sammich right now too! A big fat slice on just about any bread, mustard, onions, even a slice of 'mater on top. |
I grew up eating that stuff. I have some in the fridge right now, and had it yesterday. When I was little I called it "tiger meat". We ate it quite a bit, and it was always one of my favorites on my mom's home made bread.
The name alone sounds obscene..."Braunschweiger"...
"I took this girl home last night and she wanted me to stick it up her Braunschweiger". "Dude"! "Did you see that"? "That chick just deep-throated that guys Braunschweiger up to the bristles". "Man, no more chili cheese dogs for me". "You should have smelled the Braunschweiger I left in the executives washroom". Then again... it is German. Everything sounds obscene. |
I used to eat Braunschweiger sandwiches with Grey Pupon
everyday in elementary school. I loved that stuff! Then I found out what it was and I can't touch it. I'm weird like that. |
Grew up on the stuff! Dad always had a roll of it. We used to have braunchweiger with butter on toast sammiches. Then my wife got me on braunchweiger, cheese, onion, tomato, mustard and pickles..
We ate some unusual stuff as kids with dad. We used to eat raw beef sammiches. Ground beef (pure muscle, NO fat) on white bread with (once again) butter and salt.. Man, I could eat that stuff all day long. Wouldn't do it today with all the nasties out there. But, I still like my roast beef rare as well as my steaks.. Cut off the horns, wipe its ass and slap it on my plate! (BTW, in the "sophisticated" world, raw beef is called Steak Tar-Tar) Limberger cheese is good too! But, then again, my whole family is from Wisconsin. Grandpa came over from Germany...100% pure kraut minus the laderhosen.. |
I ate it when I was a little kid at the neighbor's house. I liked it then. Don't know if I'd like it now.
I love it, but I only eat it once a year due to the health factor.
I love it on dark rye with thinly sliced raw onion. My friend from Poland makes the stuff at home and stuffs it in a sock! It is great! |
I used to eat it as a kid at my grandma's house. Thick slice on italian bread with some real mayo. I liked it but it gave me heartburn real bad. I havent had it in probably 20 yrs though.
My dad once told my sister to make him a Braunschwiger and cheese sandwich. She came out later with a mustard and cheese sandwich instead, saying she could not find the BROWN SUGER.
Good stuff.
I like it with a thin layer of mayo on each slice of bread and then a good 1/4 inch of the stuff in between. Yum Yum! |
Don't forget crushed potato chips on top of the mayo! Ymmmmmmmmm!
We grew up eating it between slices of Wonder Bread smeared with Miracle Whip.
Ah, heaven on a slice of caraway rye, horseradish mustard, mayo, salt-pepper and a large, frothy lager! My last meal, if I may. |
My kids love Braunschweiger. They beg for it whenever we go grocery shopping.

Why am I reading this. I had my annual physical the other day and for the first time in years my cholesterol looked good. Just reading this thread might send it haywire again.
