My buddy's son is in Marine boot camp right now, soon he'll be another of my brothers. When I was in Danners were the shit, what's the best boots you can get now? I figure good boots make any grunt happy, but if you have a better idea let's hear it. Right now his dad is thinking about a Gerber LMF II, but I really think boots would be better. I wear custom Danners, EEEEE. The only boot company that makes USMC authorized boots in that width. I buy boots 1 time a year and maintain 2 pairs. Danners take a little bit to break in, but worth the work. The RAT boots are great but the leather used is supposed to be more flexible, so it doesn't last as long. Hence the doubled up toe and heel pocket.
OP, shoot me an IM when you get a minute. |

| I've been wearing the Oakley SSI boots for the summer. Don't recommend them for military use at all. I'm quickly going back to my Danner Acadias. Been wearing those for 8 years now and love them. We don't get too many days below 0 here so non insulated with Thorlos or Smartwools is good enough for me. |

I have used Danners almost exclusively in my career. While rapelling, or in urban environment I have tried Oakleys, Adidas GSG9, 5.11 (yucky), but I was dissatisfied with all of them and returned to Danners. I probably have 5 pair that I wear at different times, but I am really enjoying the new Combat Hiker, and deals are out there to be had if you look around. They are pretty popular with some, others not so much. I have no comlaints, other than them not being resole-able by the factory. They can occasionally be found on the Danner website on sale for like 180 or so, but normally run well over 300. To me, they are very comfortable, and I usually have trouble finding a good fit for my size 14 1/2 boot. Hope this is of some value to you.

I've been wearing Danners since 1987. I wore them through all four years in the army as an 11H. I still have all my toes. Are they "the best boot out there"? Maybe not, but for the price, the quality can't be beat. Just don't buy the ones that are made in China, there is a reason they are $100 cheaper. |
