[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Boiled Peanuts (Page 1 of 3)

I have been following GD for a few years and I don't remember seeing any threads on boiled peanuts.  Though a great many food threads are common.

A couple weeks ago I saw a segment on CBS Sunday Morning about BPs.   I have lived in Socal my whole life and never had any.  I have spent time in Atlanta,  GA and Alexandria,  VA and never realized that these were a thing.

So I found Amazon carried Peanut Patch canned BPs.   I thought I would give em a try.  Two different flavors. .salted and Cajun.   Heat em in the microwave for a few minutes.

At first, I found them odd.  Texture of a cooked Lima Bean.  Very flavorful.   After I had a few, I found them oddly addicting

So does anyone else have any thoughts or opinions on boiled peanuts.  I say thanks to the South for a great culinary contribution!

I never heard of them until I read a thread about them on here.  I have to try them.  They sound like they could be good.  People in the thread you pretty much had to get them fresh if you wanted the good ones.

You ordered canned boiled peanuts? Blech...

Best from the side of the road fresh from the no licensed cook.

I cook them several times per year.   I get my raw peanuts from W-Mart.  Don't know about your area.

Put a 1lb bag of raw peanuts in a big stock pot with a lot of water. Keep adding water as it boils down. I place things over the top of the peanuts to keep them underwater. They like to float.

Add seasoning. Crab boil, chili powder, etc. Add about 3/4 to 1 cup salt per gallon of water. You can do less, but it's a place to start.

Boil, then heavy simmer for 3 hrs or so. Test along the way until you find a good place to stop.

Drain. Bag. Put what's left of your pigout in the fridge. Can be reboiled or waved.

Yay, Boiled Peanuts!

Next time I am in the South,  I will certainly try the roadside kind.  Here in Socal we don't have that, though there might be a Farmers market that has them, I will check it out next time.

I saw on Amazon some DIY packages. ...anyone have any experience doing it yourself? ?

I saw the same morning news report, I think it was with Rita Braver. She said in her shrill NY accent, Why would anyone want to boil a peanut? I just LOL'ed.  Ignorance is bliss Rita, now go eat your caviar.

Canned boiled peanuts are like instant grits, an insult to God, the South, General Robert E. Lee, and his horse Traveller. They shouldn't even be served to Yankees -- unless they're inlaws who have overstayed their welcome.

No thanks. The ones in the cans are even more gross IMO.

I boil them for every football game tailgate party.  Put them on the stove on Friday morning and add salt and water all day long until they are done.

I was in FL for a business trip last week with some Swiss co-workers and tried to find them some boiled peanuts.... no luck.

I did take them to the Publix deli though.

This works.

I can get "green" peanuts at our local farmers market and they are better - if and when available. Crock pot for 5 hrs or 5 days but not a minute more.... or you'll get the back o' my hand!  Also put more salt in than you think you will need. Or follow a recipe.

They are a regular thing around tampa since I arrived in the mid 60s...I don't see as many road side stands as much anymore...most of the little river bars will have a fresh batch cooking...canned

I had my first boiled peanut 2 weeks ago.  It was nasty.  Never again.

Peanuts aren't supposed to be soft...like a cooked pea.  I like them hard and crunchy...so roasted is my go-to.

Asked my 9 year-old grandson if he'd like to try a boiled peanut. He said yes, so I handed him one.

He looked at it and said, "This looks like my nutsack."

My son and I busted up. Needless to say, Grandma and his Mom didn't find it funny at all.

they are great.

The canned ones are meh at best so if you liked them real roadside peanuts would make you question your sexuality and if its gay to rape the vendor.

its not.

That was my first thought. I have never had them so I won't turn my nose. But soft peanuts do not sound good.

You can cook them in a 5qt crock pot.

1/2 cup salt
3 lbs green peanuts
fill crock pot with water
cook on low overnight
8 to 10 hours

Women love hot nuts in the AM!!

Hint: dissolve salt in hot water before adding to crock pot.

They have to be made using fresh dug green p-nuts. If they are made from dried raw p-nuts, they are  I put up about a bushel a year, bag them up in qt. bags and freeze them. That usually gets me through until the next harvest.

When you boil them yourself you can stop at whatever point you want to.  While called "soft", they're actually not mooshy.  They still have texture and a pretty good amount of resistance.  Pop about six in your mouth and enjoy.  They're hard to stop eating.  I eat mine over the sink where the shells and mess are no problem.  Man, I gotta get me some peanuts to boil over the holidays.

The small redskin peanuts from New Mexico make the best boiled peanuts, in my opinion.  4-5/pod, easy to crack and extract...good stuff!

Thanks for the recipes.   Would love to DIY and then will report back.

So best mail order source for green peanuts???

Guess I will have to wait till next summer to get some?

They are great, when fresh and hot.  Decent, when still fresh but cool/cold.  Comparing canned BP to fresh is like comparing canned tuna to fresh Ahi.

They are easy enough to make.  Turkey fryer, raw peanuts, water, salt, maybe some red pepper flakes.  Boil them until soft/done.  Shell and eat.

I'm not a big fan of them but the ones cooked with fresh green peanuts by someone who knows what they are doing is pretty good.

THIS. And those canned boiled p-nuts are crap

Also, many of the roadside stands let them stay in the water waaayyyy too long and they also taste like crap!

Boiled peanuts done right.....one of the best things with a cold beer!

Dothan Alabama is the national peanut festival...

If you liked canned ones you will shit your pants over the actual real boiled peanuts.

Best is fresh on  the side of the road. (Every few miles here is a boiled peanut stand)

Another Yep.  Boilt goober hulls are the only trash I've pitched out of a moving vehicle.  Two at a time, at that.

They vary in taste MASSIVELY.

If you get some bad ones that were canned (agreed... yuck...) or someone's DIY home recepie, try them again somewhere else.

Bad ones will taste like spoiled stale peanut butter, and sort of a musty dirt/dust/basement odor, good ones are kind of like nutty beans, and whatever spices they were done up with.

Tried some, once, from a street vendor that had a pretty good crowd around him/her.  Disgusting is all I have to say.

Goobers should be roasted and salted and in the shells.

Yeah, used to be more common at roadside stands.  The guy with the best ones around here sold them and regular produce.  We called him "Dirty Hand Man".  Lovely, terbakky juice grin, too. The man made some great BP's.  Guess he died. Now, most quick rips have them for sale around here.  They aren't as good and cost more than Dirty's did.

Yeah, it's kind of funny.  Most of the reviews on Amazon were pretty complimentary to the canned version.

Charleston SC. I know they are everywhere there, I grew up eating them.

I only spotted one guy doing this about 1.5hrs from my home in AL, someplace outside of Gadsden.

I like the canned ones fine. They are consistent.

Fresh ones can be great or terrible depending on the cook. I think small peanuts make better boiled peanuts than large ones. Number one (okay one and two) mistake people make is not cooking long enough and not using enough salt.
