time for a hard drive to be replaced HOPEFULLY it is just a bad boot sector, and all her data is still there. I do agree that the HD is probably BDNWW. (Broke Dick No Workie Workie) I would: 1. Buy new HD. 2. Install new HD as the master, install the old HD as a slave in the tower, but NOT hook up the power or data cable. 3. Reinstall the OS and some trusted antivirus. 4. Power down, hook up cables to your old HD. 5. Turn on comp. Run chkdsk on the SLAVE HD. 6. Run virus scan on old HD. 7. If everything checks out, move all documents, music, LOLCAT photos to the new HD. 8. FORMAT the slave HD as NTFS. No matter what, I wouldnt trust the old HD for anything I realy care about. Sure, use it to dump copies of MP3s, torrents, etc. Sure, it could have been a frrak thing that the boot sector f__ked up. However, it was probably a symptom of a bigger problem and NOT the true f-up. |

time for a hard drive operating system to be replaced Fixed it. He did mention it is the GF machine... Pushing a new OS on a GF, unless it is some apple os (SHINY!), is a bad idea. Sure, most of us here have no problem popping a linux live CD in the tray. Trying to make someone else adventurous towards new OSs is a bad idea. Even if she tolerates it, your life will be innundated with questions like, "Where is my itunes?", and "Where is my internet explorer?" EVERY 10 MINUTES. |

time for a hard drive operating system to be replaced Fixed it. this is what we were getting. I had to restore the OS to the HD. And that cleared it up. My son (who I have released from hanging by his thumbs) was installing a bunch of upgrades to one of his downloaded game programs. |
