I switched from a cheap dieal up service to my local cable companies internet sevice.

All was great for the first day, super fast speed stc.

The next morning when I got up, there were 87 pop-up screans on my computer, as well as a "searchbar" at the bottom and an new tool bar at the top.

Within minutes of trying to use this new service the next day, the pop up windows were comming up so fast that I could not download a single page, and could hardly keep up with them to get them off my screen.

Now, I was told by many people all that I needed was a router and it was all I would ever need. Obviously I was lied to.

I have run ad-ware and it gived me over 300 items, but honestly, I don't have a clue as to what I am supposed to do with them after it shows the files after a scan.  Many of them are called Data miners. Yes I read the onscrean directions, they don't tell me crap.

I ran a system scan that the cable company told me to and was able to remove 5 propblem, and they then tell me (have not yet had the chance) to add the googl tool-bar, and this will take care of all the pop-up windows.

So far I am about a day from calling them and telling them to take the whole thing back.

Do I need a fire wall?

They gave me a list of fire walls I might want to consider making me think they are full of shit in the first place about their security.

AtGaurd, ConSeal,Armor 97, & gaurd Dog are the ones they gave me.

I have had the cable unplugged since early last night to stop anything else from getting in.

What do I need to do to stop all these damn windows?  It takes over three minutes to load a page.  I am back to using my dial up (juno) right now.  I get about 2 pop-ups per hour on this system but it only runs at 38,00bps when the cable was running 100Mbps.  The juno is a hell of a lot faster right now.

Help!

Shit!  If nothing else go to www.ZDnet.com and search for either zone-alarm, or some other firewall program.  Most have free 30 day trail downloads so you can test them out first.

Also, try empting your cookies and history and see if that helps untill you get the firewall installed.

Now that is funny.   That is exactly what I have done in the last 10 minutes.

I knew about the cookies and history, but picked the Zonealarm on a whimm.

So what does this router thin do anyway?  I am only using one computer and it oviously has no security properties, do I need to go back an knee knock the punk who sold it to me?

I am no computer genius but here is my solution to this crap:

A router with firewall, Linksys.

Pop-Up Stopper, free edition.

NO cable company supplied "enhanced browser" BS!  Just use IE and update as required.

I have Zone Alarm Pro but leave it off most of the time because it is unstable.

Good luck!

Thanks guys.  I am on the cable modem right now and everything is working fine.

One small problem, when i tried to log onto soemthing for the first time; it said I need to enable cookies.  How do I do this???

Sorry to sound so stupid but I am trying to learn.

The Zone Alarm is only a 15 day trial.  What is the best Firewall??

The best firewall, IMHO, is hardware - network address translation - found in that Linksys router I mentioned.

you got good advice from everybody. just to add, zone alarm offers a basic version ( not "pro") for free. check out their website for details (zonelabs.com).
usually if you do not have cookies enabled, internet explorer will show what looks like a little red eyeball towards the bottom of the screen if it blocked a cookie. double-click that "eye" and it will give you the option of enabling cookies for that site.
also, if zonealarm is on, double click on that icon on the bottom of the screen to pull up the "control center". on the left side you will see tabs. click on "privacy". then click on the top tab that says "site list". that will show the cookie policy for the different sites you visit. right-click the site in question, and it will let you edit the cookie rules. hope this helps!

I stopped getting popup and popunders when I started using Mozilla as my browser.  One little click and no more problems! [:D]

Well I use IE6.0 and don't have problems with this either. And it works better than Mugzilla IMHO.

I use McAfee Virus Scan Professional, Pop-up Stopper (free ed.). At work for my OE mail I use MailWasher (free ed.) to bounce the spam.

I am on Cable internet at work and at home.
My brother is also and has a similar setup and has started getting "Web Search Hi-Jacks".
It will open (pop-under) a new page everytime he hits next on a search.

Any ideas on this one?

Are you running windows XP? First make sure Messenger is disabled. Messenger is a service that is enabled by default. I'm not talking about Instant Messaging. I used to get endless advertisements even when i wasn't surfing. Also, if you have a firewall (I really hope you do, you need it)and antivirus installed, then download "spybot search and destroy" and Ad-aware (lavasoft website). there are free versions available that should detect and remove most of the spyware and highjackers out there.

Here's my setup and it works like a champ with my cable broadband service

IE6 with settings to prompt for cookie acceptance
Google toolbar for pop-up blocking and easy searching (free)
AVG antivirus (free)
Ovislink SOHO NAT router ($65)
Run Spybot once a week

The free Zonealarm is adequate if you don't have a SOHO router/firewall
