Do you wear a helmet when riding a bicycle?

I do not.
3/13/2009 5:23:29 PM EDT
[#1]
I don't.

[#2]
no, I was born in the 70's

In junior high school I was a pallbearer for a friend who hit a curb and went over the handlebars without a helmet.  Your mileage may vary.

If I am riding a regular bike at reasonable speed, no.

If I am on my road bike, hell yes!  On some of the hills I rode in MO, I could reach speeds of 45mph on the downhill.  Add the danger of being hit by a car, and a lightweight helpmet doesn't seem like much of an inconvenience.

[#5]
Depends how much you ride.

If you ride alot for sport  or for exercise, yes you should be in the habit of putting your helmet on.

If it's just a casual ride here and there I would feel ok not wearing one.

3/13/2009 5:36:33 PM EDT
[#6]
Always.

If I take a spill at 30+ MPH, I'm going to be hurting pretty bad.  An unprotected head is just asking for trouble.

I always ride by bicycle with a helmet.

An Arfcom thread just for you:

Always. I mostly ride trails but even if I'm on the road I still wear it out of habit. It has saved me more than a few times riding.

In 1976, my cousin - big time cyclist - was hit by a drunk driver in either Oak Park or Ferndale - can't remember. I think you know where those 2 cities are.

She spent a good deal of time in William Beaumont at 12 mile and Woodward. Been a long long time; pretty sure that's the intersection.

Her last name is Pedigo, and there was a lawsuit.

She was not wearing a helmet.

She now has permenant brain damage.

In May 1998, I was hit by a car right in front of the German hospital in Bitburg Germany. My helmet was crushed.

Some folks think I got brain damage from that, but I've always been like this.

Wait - that helmet probably saved my life - or at least a monster of a headache.

As always, I have no problem if folks don't care to wear their helmet; it ain't my brain.

Man, I'm starting to forget some of the exact dates...

I was born in the 60's, when my dad would stick his arm out to hold me back if he was driving and making a quick stop. Of course I was in the front seat! Seat belts? Helmets? I don't understand.
3/13/2009 5:45:41 PM EDT
[#11]
always

3/13/2009 5:46:18 PM EDT
[#12]
Oh yeah - I hit my head on a tree branch about a month ago - good thing I had my helmet on.

Can't remember who, but someone here posted they moved it for me.

Don't get a light blue one.

When the poo hits the fan, people here might mistake you for the UN.

[#14]
Yes
3/13/2009 5:50:02 PM EDT
[#15]
Helmet?  Fuck yes.  On some of the shit out here I wear armor on my forearms and elbows and if it's gnarly downhill on my shins and knees  too.

3/13/2009 5:50:19 PM EDT
[#16]
No one that ever crashed their bike wearing a helmet regretted having the helmet on.

Many that have crashed their bike not wearing a helmet have regretted not having one on.

[#17]
I like being able to wipe my own ass, so yes I wear a helmet!
3/13/2009 5:53:01 PM EDT
[#18]
Always. I live in a town where cyclists are seen as targets.

I don't care if you do, but I do. A-Alpha from PT Helmets.

I was clothes-lined off my bike while riding home from work. (contruction site) In the fall backwards I hit the back of my head on the corner of a cinderblock post for the fencing. My helmet was toast and my head rang for ten minutes after that. If I had not been wearing my helmet I would most likely be dead.
Yes, I wear my helmet while riding and you should too.
3/13/2009 6:12:32 PM EDT
[#24]
I always wear one. Just a week ago I took a spill on the trail and cracked my helmet. I had a head ache for a couple days. I ordered the same exact helmet right away. Helmets wouldn't be necessary if you knew when you were going to crash. I have yet to predict any one of my crashes until it was too late.

Kick your door with your shoe on. Then kick your door without your shoe on.

I wear a helmet.

[#26]
I downhill so its a very very stupid to not wear a helmet. I have hit my head on multiple occasions. I have broke 2 full face lids.

Riding casually I dont wear one.

Not me but I have hit this drop and the one next to it. You get the idea. Protect your dome.

Define 'riding a bicycle.'

Hell, Steve, you could be the most pussy-assed rider I've ever seen.

#1, you would not even be allowed ON the trails around here without wearing a helmet properly.

#2, when doing motorcycle speeds on a road-bike, a helmet meeting the pavement is a better idea than a head.

But, fuck, for all we know you ride a beach cruiser around town while wearing a pink tutu.  Those kinds of guys - who also are proud they don't wear a helmet but often do less then 10 MPH, are just annoying.

I, too, was born in the early 70's, but that doesn't mean jack.  I'm just gonna wait for motown steve to post a picture of his bike collection, or him in action, before I judge this a credible thread vs. a Rush Limbaugh thread.

When riding fairly mild trails at comfortable speeds, no.
When riding anything more challenging or at higher speeds, yes.
When riding on the road, definitely.  (Although I try to avoid riding on the road...I don't road bike and don't own a road bike.)

Carrying a gun for protection but not wearing a helmet/seatbelt is way too contradictory for my tastes.  I always wear one.

Always. When I was mountainbiking, I never could tell when I was going to go over the handlebar untill I was already on my way. On the road, you never can tell when somebody is going to try to plow you under.

I didn't used to wear a helmet, until the day when a car eased alongside me and someone stuck his feet out of the passenger side window and kicked me in the small of the back, sending me head first into the ditch. More than ten years later and I still get paranoid if cars follow me instead of passing smartly.

Its your choice. Its your head. It might be your funeral.

Mountain biking on my Kona, yes.

Whipping around the neighborhood on the old Schwinn or riding the family bike trails, no.

One Christmas I got a bike with hand brakes. No one told me to hit the rear brake first. I was tearing down a hill and came to an intersection. Over the handlebars and approximated the Wright's first flight. No head injuries but picking asphalt out of your hide sucks.

I knew a guy who slipped on some ice outside a restaurant in Atlanta. Shook it off, went home and went to bed. Never woke up. Subdural hematoma. Maybe everyone should wear a helmet at all times.

ETA:

My dad was prone to observe, after one of my escapades, "Son, you may be dumb, but you're not stupid. Why'd you (fill in the blank)?"

If he saw me do the above he'd amend his statement.

I'm 6'4" - I've accused members of the local motorcycle clubs that host enduros of having their shortest members cut trail

It's not a matter of "if" I crash, it's a matter of "when" I crash.  On that note, I went over the side of the loading ramp when getting my mountain bike out of the back of my toy hauler and dropped straight down ~2ft going over the bars and landing on my nose - a regular helmet wouldn't have done shit and a full face probably would have shattered and embedded in my face.  A helmet won't save us from everything but I'll up my odds by wearing one.

Never found out. I called his office and his secretary broke the news. It had started snowing/sleeting while he was with friends eating. I still have his card in my book. Think about him when I come to it.

Sorry - scanner is dead, so this is a pic of a pic.

This is my arm, the day I got out of the German hospital.

Almost the entire left side of my body looks like my arm.

Except my head.

No one knows how, but I didn't break one single bone.

I dented the hood of her car, almost went through the windshield, and dented the roof of her car.

I woke up on the pavement.

The only thing I remember is seeing her turn in front of me, and thinking, "Oh shit."

Always on my motorbikes, never on my pedal bikes...strange, I know.

Pedal bike is for small town streets and easy trails and I was born in the 60's too.

Maybe this summer I'll look into a bicycle helmet for me and the wife...she needs one...long story.

The weird thing is that the local bike trails are the single most dangerous bit of riding I do. They're full of pedestrians, children darting back and forth across the path, and generally completely oblivious people in completely random and unpredictable motion. I feel safer descending at 45MPH than I do at 10 MPH on the bike path.
