| I am looking for an exercise machine, I am thinking about a bicycle machine, I am more concerned with it taking up less room than it having a bunch of bells and whistles and entertainment centers. What would you suggest? |

If you want something which will give you the maximum workout in the least amount of time...
The Concept 2 Rower is the way to go. You can stand it up when not in use, and it takes far less floorspace than about any other equipment. As long as you can lay it down for 20min a day and use it... you WILL notice a big difference. You can get them used quite often on Craigslist or at local Used Sports Equipment stores. |

Why not just a bike? You can get a trainer for poor weather, then when it's nice you can actually go outside and have a change of scenery... That is what I would do. I have one, I just don't like riding that much. I would rather trow tire, flip tires, sled work, or hit the tire. |

How can you accomplish anything without technology?! |

| A real bike is almost useless in Wheaton, Md. (I grew up there.) Too urban, too densely populated, crazy dangerous roads for a bike...and that was 25 years ago. And now the population is twice as dense. There is no place to put in any real miles unless you load it on the car and drive for an hour. Wheaton and the entire D.C. metro area totally sucks balls. GET OUT! |

GET OUT! Ah, yeah I could see how that could be a problem... |

I got a bike trainer since I already had a bike. I rarely actually go outside and ride my bike though so for about the same money I could have purchased a decent stationary bike that would be quieter and take up a little less space. Though with the bike/trainer I can hang the bike off the ceiling and fold up the trainer if I need to get stuff out of the way.
I got a fluid trainer and when I do sprints like for HIIT it starts to cavitate. Im assuming thats what its doing. It starts vibrating and gets very hard to peddle until I back off a bit. So for sprinting a mag trainer might be better than fluid. Then again maybe the Blackburn fluid trainer just sux. I have no idea. I got the fluid because they are supposed to be a lot quieter. Also if like me you have a mountain bike, mine is actually a hybrid, you will want to get a smooth tire for the trainer or the buzzing will make you insane. I also picked up a rower a while back. I looked for months for a Concept2 on craigslist since you can pick them up for half price or less if you catch them. After missing several C2s a LifeCore R100 popped up and I got it for about 1/3rd of retail. Concept2 is the gold standard but the R100 is every bit as nice if not nicer. Its digitally adjustable vs manually adjusting the fan blades. Its supposed to be quieter and has a strap instead of a chain. So far I have been liking it. It kicks my ass in short order though. It doesn't stand up on end like the C2 but if you need to reduce the footprint you can sort of fold it in half. |
