A lot of drummers dislike Neil Peart (Rush) because he's predictable and formulaic musically and perceived as arrogant/reserved personally. For me, he's the business. He tops my list and has been a huge influence on me to think big. He lost his daughter (car crash) and wife (cancer) within a year of each other ('97-98), and came back.
Who would top your list? Stewart Copeland? Billy Cobham? John Bonham? Buddy Rich? Others? Nate Morton of Rock Star INXS was pretty impressive (along with the guitarist with the fauxhawk). While you're at it, name your least favorite/most overrated. Mine: recent Lars "cymbal crash on 2 and 4" Ulrich, T. "spindly punk ass biiiatch" Barker, etc. |
in no particular order:
omar hakim terry bozio Neil Peart John Bohnam Keith Moon |
I don't care if Neil Peart eats babies and cums on your sister....he's the best. |
I bet I'm pretty good. I've been known to beat it all night long without missing a beat.
Too many to mention. Is this limited to people in bands, or can we list solo artists etc. ? I believe you mean Travis Barker, not Trevor. Yes Lars is a concieted prick, but Metallica has influenced countless musicians, myself included. Here are some that I look up to: Terry Bozzio (Zappa, solo) Virgil Donati (solo) Mike Portonoy (Dream Theater) Igor Cavalera (Sepultura) Gene Hoglan (Death, Strapping Young Lad) Joey Jordison (Slipknot) Dave Culross (Malevolent Creation, Suffocation) and many many more. Been playin for about 10 years |

Neil Peart's nickname is 'the professor '. He is and has been the man .
Danny Carey is a badass as well... Stewart Copeland ,Tim Alexander,John Bonham,Matt Cameron arent to shabby either |
+1 Forgot about Herb. Glad he started playing again. |
What do 7-eleven coffee and Ginger Baker have in common? They both suck without Cream |
Thats another way of saying they're jealous of his extreme talent. Alot of music nowadays doesn't require musical talent as much as entertainment talent. Neil is the real deal, a talented musician. |
Those folks never listened to Dave Weckl then. |
Spike Jones. Not just a great drummer, but also a true musician and showman.
I forgot about Danny Carey. Technical chops of Mike Portnoy but with the ability to groove.
"Spoonman" by Soundgarden is Matt Cameron's masterpiece. Oh, and where's the love for Carter Beauford? Forget about Dave's wimpy/leftist leanings. Beauford is a monster. |
Tommy Aldridge has always been my all-time favorite. Neil Peart is one of the greatest also. I am also a big fan of the late Randy Castillo and John Bonham. I could go on and on...
Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich are great.
Peart is the man too. I used to wonder if John Bohnam really was that funky, or was he just drunk at the time? ETA: I still can't get my mind around how fricken crazy Peart's drum kits were. |
His most famous kit....the Tama 2.0:
http://www3.telus.net/photographix/Neil%20Peart%20RUSH.jpg His new DWs sound less than optimal. He needs to bring the Ludwigs out of storage. go back to Zildjian while he's at it. http://store.drumbum.com/media/neilpeart.jpg |
I disagree with all 3 sentences . |
Sorry but I have a hard time believing that older Tamas sound better than DW. Recording variables perhaps? BTW, I'm not a DW fan. |
A LOT of drummers don't seem to be in love with DW drums
as they were ten years ago. |
Id sure love all over a set of DW's -if i could afford a set that is... |
Bill Bruford
Neil Peart Buddy Rich Stewart Copeland Phil Collins (Ack - Ptooey) Omar Hakim Terry Bozzio |
I don't know who the best is. It depends on what you like. I rate them like this.
Most tasteful drummer: Catrter Beauford Most technical drummer: Dave Weckl (this guy's drumming is perfect - not really the best, but just perfect) My favorite new guy: Benny Greb Benny also seems to have at least two brains: CLICK Greatest Drummer of old: Buddy Rich |
I'd have to say that Peart is the best.
However, Bonham is my favorite. Not replacing him in Zep was the only right decision. As good as the others were (especially Page), Bonham was the heart beat of the band. Would have been a huge mistake to replace him. |
Pearl Reference Series. Blow DW's out of the water any day of the week. |
I've always liked Neil Peart . Not only is he a great drummer; he is a thinking man, which in rock and roll is rare.
I have a set of 80's Sonor Signature Series in bubinga , so Im good .I still wouldnt mind having a set of DW's either though,or Ayotte ,or Orange County,or Starclassics ,or..... Gretch,Slingerland, hell I bang on an oil drum if you gave it to me. |

Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, now of Pearl Jam and Bill Ward of Black Sabbath top my list. Not to mention, Bill Ward could sing as well as play the hell out of the drums.
John Bonham was awesome, if not overrated, in my opinion. However, he helped to lay the groundwork for future drummers. |
Surprised nobody's listed Danny Carey. No Tool fans here? Not to mention his kit made from recycled Paiste Signatures
1) Neil Peart-not a whole lot that needs to be said.
That aside I like too many to take the time to type them. Travis Barker, as the original poster said , is a skinny punk, that aside the dude has got mad chops. |
and a smoking hot wife |
Most of you guys are all going old school so I'll add little freshness. Travis Barker from Blink 182. He always adds intesity to the music without missing a beat. He makes the faster rythym fit even in the slower songs. Next time you listen to one of the songs pay special attention to his drum work.

Brann Dailor currently with Mastodon.
Jean-Paul Gaster who plays for Clutch. Sam West who is in Stavesacre. Gene Hoglan and Jesse Smith. |
Stavesacre rules! I thought I was their only fan, though. |
