I once was using TetherBerry with a blackberry on Sprint and that worked pretty well.

I am now using an android phone and prefer anything that doesn't require rooting.

I'm feeling cheap and don't want to spend anymore than I need to for something that I won't use too often.

Recommendations?

ETA: Using a Kyocera phone on Virgin Mobile.

Paid version of foxfi has been good and no issues with big red.

I was thinking pdanet+ and leave it at that.

Just saw that the Pdanet+ is only 7.95 for a limited time.

If you are using a Samsung phone on Verizon SwitchPro Widget is $1.99 and gets around the subscription check when you fire up the portable wifi hotspot.

Google your phone with "SwitchPro" to see if it works with your model.

I use easytether. It is wired tethering via usb and therefore only sometimes useful, but my phone cannot be rooted and modified so the great wireless tethering apps always stumble and fail more than they work.

Heck, any of the limited data plans it should be included.  Why should they care what device uses the data?  I would figure they would encourage tethering because there were be more of a chance you going over your limit hooked up to a computer.  Then they can charge you even more.

You'd think they would use that logic considering the fact that just about any phone out there can still use the net on a local WIFI without service.

Why they can't get on board with usb tethering, I don't know.

Switchpro widget is the bomb!  Not the easiest to set up but once it is, just touch the icon and wifi is on.

I use pdanet (aka Foxfi) from time to time and am happy with it.  I did buy the full version a few years ago and have been able to transfer it from phone to phone using the password they gave me.

I use easyteather on my casio gzone.  It works.  If I my was wireless on I would have to plug the phone in anyways to keep it charged.  Verizon unlimited data rocks btw.
