Now honestly, I try to not wear tin-foil, I really don't, but when I see stuff like this it makes me want to raise reynolds stock a smidge.

I didn't know about these people until I was reading an account of a "kid" from OCDO who was open carrying at Sky Harbor Airport and a "Behavior Detection Officer" notified the PD who approached the kid who was sitting waiting for someone texting on his phone.

How long until we have these officers everywhere or facial detection software in cameras alerting L.E. to people who look like they are guilty of something?

BDO was chosen after "Behaviour Officers" realized their acronym caused giggles.

Israel has been using these and other, more invasive profiling techniques for quite some time.  It seems to have worked.

The goal is to be less intrusive yet more proactive.  As RictusGrin elucidates, the Israelis have used these techniques for decades with great success.  They usually only suffer breakdowns when they rely on other nations' security forces instead of their own.

TSA's BDO-trained security officers are screening travelers for involuntary physical and physiological reactions that people exhibit in response to a fear of being discovered. TSA recognizes that an individual exhibiting some of these behaviors does not automatically mean a person has terrorist or criminal intent. BDOs do, however, help our security officers focus appropriate resources on determining if an individual presents a higher risk or if his/her behavior has a non-threatening origin. Individuals exhibiting specific observable behaviors may be referred for additional screening at the checkpoint to include a handwanding, limited pat down and physical inspection of one's carry-on baggage. Referrals are based on specific observed behaviors only, not on one's appearance, race, ethnicity or religion.

We(along with NY) will have it first then the rest of the US.

Because the Israelis never have terrorism occur within their borders?

NY Airports (even small ones upstate including Syracuse, Elmira, Ithaca, Binghamton) have them and have been using them for over 6 months.  There are also working with some other programs directly connected to the FAMS.

I've flown on El-Al Air back in the 1980's when hi-jacking was a bunch more common then it is today. The Israelis had it right.

If the terrorist go there so do we - or accept the fact that we're going to have a whole bunch more aircraft full of Americans crashing into the Sears Tower, Disney World, or the Super Bowl. Their will to kill Americans by committing suicide isn't something a typical American can grasp. There are people here that wouldn't care if more people die as long as they don't get delayed at the aircraft another two minutes.

It was legal to carry in the open area of Sky Harbor-no go behind the metal detectors.

I think though that TSA changed the rules.

A couple articles on the page are about these guys nailing border jumpers.

The one here at COS wasn't smart enough to stand back from the line when "whispering" into the microphone.   I clearly heard them identify a guy in a black hat (who was standing in front of me) for an "exaggerated yawn....this was 0615.  Haven't been flying as much because work is slowing down, so that is the only good example.

They're obviously also engaging in more "small talk" to see how you respond (like Customs & Immigration officers do.)   Of course with the TSA, it's much less professional.

Don't forget that they now have the blue uniform shirts, which confers a +1 to the Perception attribute.   Wonder how much that change cost?
