While my wife was operating the 'puter, it crashed. Win'95. It will only start in safe mode. Boot text shows that fonts fail with error 0016. Fixable or time to upgrade?? Any help appreciated. |

I have an older Dell that came with Win95 on it. The CPU was 266MHz and it had 64MB of RAM, with a 3Gig Hard Drive... I managed to get XP on it, but it ran SOOOO slow it was painful. I took XP out and replaced it with Win98SE. I also upgraded the 266MHz P2 CPU to 450MHz. It runs a million times better now. It still has 64MB of RAM, which is soon to be upgraded to 256MB. That's about the max it can be upgraded to, and is plenty adequate for the 12 yr old that uses it... I also have a Packard Bell unit, that came with 333MHz and 128MB RAM. It also has a 10Gig Hard Drive. I did get WinXP on this machine, but it was a tad lazy... I upgraded the AMD K6 CPU to 450MHz, and noticed a big improvement. I'm also bumping the RAM up to 256MB. Moral of the story, if you have time and patience you can make the old dog run. Just depends HOW old the unit is, and how much upgrade it can support... I really like WinXP, but on an old slow computer, I think Win98SE is about the max they can handle... Just my two "computer newbie" cents... |
| If your PC has win95 on it, chances are it's an old slow POS. You would be shocked at how fast and capable a brand new bottom of the line pc with XP is compared to your old one. If you have 400 or so to spend, get a dell. Remember, you'd have to pay at least 100 for a copy of XP to try and upgrade your old pc... |
