I hear alot about going to the range and shooting, but how many of you shoot in your backyard? I have made backyard targets for the .22/.45 out of plywood and sand. I am moving to a new house in a few weeks and am thinking about setting up a new range for the AR.

I am interested in hearing/seeing what you do in your own backyard.

I have a 50 yard range set up with table that is staked into the ground.
For a back drop i have large logs from some trees that fell down.

depends on how  big you back yard is.... i've got 40 acres... so yes, I've got a 100yard combat range, and a 340yard single lane long distance range....

I used a back hoe to dig into the side of 2 hills for the ranges. so they are plenty thick enough. hell we even shoot .50 out here.

I have a tactical range in the back yard.  It is a natural area for it with high berms.  I also go to the local club range which is 4 miles away and the range at work.  For the backyard I use old election signs.

I've got a 50 yard range in my backyard for pistol and .22 rifles.  I set up an old archery foam block and set up a 3/8" thick piece of diamond plate at an angle behind it.  Everything is angled down or disintegrates (lead bullets) on contact and the plate isn't dented at all.  Neighbors don't care as they are hunters or gun enthusiasts, themselves.

I live on a 30' X 60' piece of property so I have to drive to the range.

while i have plenty of land for my own range, i really don't shoot much at home. i put up a small backstop (large logs and dirt) and shoot some suppressed .22 and 9, but for the bigger stuff i usually shoot at a sandpit a friend owns. it is just a few miles down the road, and i can shoot basically 360 degrees.

I live across the street from a school. Only thing I shoot in my backyard is my bow.

Just moved a few months ago.  Old house next to father in law had a 15yd pistol range, 100yd rifle range and on Sundays when the sandpit crews weren't working I'll shoot over the berm into the pits out to 600yds.  New house I'm building a 25yd pistol/.22 rifle in backyard.  It will be constructed out of earth and lumber.  There's ranges around but haven't visted them yet.

My property butts up to hundreds of acres of heavy woods. Fallen trees serve as backstops on my two ranges.

One range is set-up for 100yd and 50yr shooting. While the other is set-up for 25yd and closer (handgun range).

I'm fortunate, I know it, and I take full advantage.

Our place is about 12 acres which is enough...  Cool thing about the land here, is that we have these things called Mima Mounds...  We live in the worlds most preserved area of them...  They are naturally good for back stops!

Here is a pic of what they look like!

I knew there had to be others out there. Does any one use the "sand boxes" for backstops. I'll try to find a link to them. I make mine about 3 feet square. A piece of plywood on the back. 2 x 12's for the sides and bottom. And then some foam insulation stuff on the front. Fill it with sand and nothing will go through it.

You guys have to move. Now is the time to buy! If you have a job.

My wife and I moved in town when our first child was born. Closer to everything seemed to be a reasonable motive. It sucked! Within a year we were back in the country.

If I can't shoot my guns from the back door or run around the yard naked (or better yet my wife) I don't want to live there!

I have about a million acres of private land at my disposal and I shoot 500-1000yds every so often but I have a club range 1/2 mile away with berms from 15-300yds and solid benches. I shoot alot

I shoot out to about 200 yards on my property. All of my "neighbors" shoot too.

I can only get 50yds. because flat is not a word you would use for my property; on the other hand the first hill makes a convenient backstop.

I'll post pics when I get home later.

ETA:  I shoot out to 800+ yards, and my land abuts 55,000 acres of preserved land in Colorado.

I can shoot 10+ miles if I had a gun to do it.

I saw an article about a guy who got about 100 used tires, connected them so they formed a big tube, propped the tube up with wooden braces, then shot through the tube downrange to a target.  He claimed that it suppressed enough so that the neighbors wouldn't know he was shooting unless they were outside, and even then the sound was quite attenuated.

Can't vouch for the accuracy of the claim, but it sounded like a pretty logical idea to me.

Not real valuable for any kind of long-range work, but if he can shoot at all...

Well since i live in urban utah i have to go to a range but one of my dreams was to build an underground single lane range of this just wider

but out to about 200 yards

There was a guy I believe over at rimfirecentral.com who dug a trench and lined up old rubber tires and used those for his tunnel. Can't remember how long it was but it worked and kept the noise down significantly.

For me I have a 150 yard range setup but only use suppressed guns on to keep the neighbors at bay (horse people freak when I shoot).

Here is one of my boys confirming zero on his deer rifle in my back yard.  The backstop for the "short" range is on the right and gives us a little over 30 yards, for handguns and initial zeroing rifles to make sure they are on the paper at 100.  Upper left is the 100 yard backstop.  You can see the dust cloud from the bullet impact and if you look closely you can see the target just below the cloud.

100 yds in the back yard.  I'm using about 10 feet of stacked pine logs for a backstop for now.....my neighbors are cool––they don't complain, and have come over to talk guns and use my range a few times.

The commute to town sucks, but country livin' has it's perks.

298yds from the back deck to the backstop.

Mostly we shoot from 15yds to 100yds.

I do belong to a gun club close by where we can shoot out to 500yds.

I've got a 60 yard range with a ridge slope as a backstop. It's one of the advantages of living out in the woods. Can shoot all of my toys.

I've got 10 acres and about a 100 yd set up.  Shoot mostly suppressed as I've had problems with one neighbor.  My back stop is a hill.

same here. about 55 yards is about all i get. but hey, still better than having to huff my stuff to a range 30 minutes away!
