Top Bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri has been caught in Pakistan, according to a report from the region quoted on Israel Radio Monday.

Pakistani forces operating against al Qaida strongholds in the country report capturing the Egyptian national, who was formerly the head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which operated in the past against the Egyptian regime.

Earlier Monday, the US commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan Lieutenant-General David Barno told Reuters that there is little evidence of al Qaida fighters still in Afghanistan, and that Pakistan's crackdown on al Qaida-linked operatives has made life harder for fugitives hiding in tribal areas near the Afghan - Pakistani border.

no, that is Al zarqawi, he's in iraq.
Zawahiri is the #2 man in Al Quaida, believed to be the mastermind behind 11 Sept 01

Different guy. Zawahri is the real brains behind Al-Qaida.

Because maybe he is dead.

There is no real evidence the Osama Bin Laden is alive or has been for 2 ½ years.

I thought there would be more coming out of this

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=278669

Since they mentioned taking prisoners AND capturing a computer.

The Egyption doctor? That would be good news.

CNN isn't showing anything. As much as I'd like this to be true, I highly doubt it is.

I did hear something about an Al-Qaeda member being caught in Pakistan, mentioned this morning on the news. But he was a much smaller fish than Al-Zawahiri. I think this is probably a false report.

The audio tapes are one of his sons, which is why they are always of deliberately BAD quality, to hide the slight differences.

However, it would be nice to find someone who knows EXACTLY where he died so we can go and exume the corpse and get positive ID.

This guy has been 'caught' before… many times.

BTW, Bin Laden is probably dead… no credible sightings of him for over two years now… he's worm food.

Sounds like BS to me.

BTW, what time did the story about Al-Zawahiri break? There's a slight chance that intel gained from that first guy they got might have led to him. I'm still doubtful, but that it a possible scenario. But if there wasn't a bit of time between stories, I find it unlikely.

This report is being denied by Pakistan:

Pakistan officials deny report al-Zawahri arrested 27 Sep 2004 15:58:30 GMT

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Pakistan officials denied an Al Arabiya television report on Monday that top al Qaeda official Ayman al-Zawahri has been arrested in Pakistan.

"It is a negative, it is wrong," Brigadier Javed Cheema, Director General of the Interior Ministry's Crisis Management Cell, told Reuters.

Can't. He's dried paste in a cave in Tora Bora.
And no number of cobbled together deliberately-very-poor-quality audio tapes trickling out of the media centers/libraries of Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, or snippets of 3-yr-old videotapes is going to convince me otherwise.

Are you seriously as stupid as Madeleine Albright, or Witch Hazel - I mean Tuh-ray-zuh Heinz-kerry was this weekend? Do you REALLY think that?

Rough translation of what happend at Pajkistan Army HQ… "hello HQ, we have caught him"… "let him go, he is one of us"… "but what will the Americans say?"… "we will tell them we got the wrong man again, just like last time we accidentally surrounded him"

No, he's Bin Laden's intellectual guide, and he assassinated Anwar Sadat back in the 80's.
