[B]Beer joins wine as aid to health

DRINKING moderate amounts of beer or spirit every day may be just as healthy as drinking wine daily, researchers say today.
While other studies have shown that wine has some effect on better health, this new study, based on a national health survey in Spain in 1993, indicates that it does not matter what form the alcohol takes so long as it is consumed in moderation.
Writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the Spanish doctors define light to moderate drinking as one to four drinks a day, with a drink defined as about half a pint of beer, a glass of wine or a generous measure of spirits.
When compared with non-drinkers (those who drank less than once a month) the wine drinkers reported fewer episodes of ill-health - but so did the people who preferred beer or spirits.
However, wine drinkers reported more ill-health than non-drinkers after they reached the age of 45.
