Sorta okay. Can't hold a candle to Pat Metheny or Tony Rice.
Pachelbel would roll over in his grave. (EDITED TO ADD:) I should have added a smiley. He is pretty entertaining. You can't really compare guitarists of such different styles. |
This guy's awesome. Who does the ARFCOM crowd think is the best guitarist for solo stuff? |
Jazz: Pat Metheny. Bluegrass/folk: Bryan Sutton. Both are regarded as virtuoso by the classical music establishment. |
Taiwanese. So I can only assume he is also Taiwanese. |
Who is the band and guitarist he is playing over, thats the real talent there. He is just copying it. Though extremely well.
Rusty Cooley gets my vote. Here's a video of him playing part of one of his songs.
ETA the freakin' link. www.rustycooley.com/videos/uti_clip/Under%20The%20Influence%20Clip%20-%20512k.wmv |
He's good, but that Chinese guy (Jerry C), is way beyond mind blowing. |
I can't get the chinese dude's video to play. Perhaps I would change my mind. Anyone have a direct link ? |
Steve Morse RULZ ALL |
It didn't play for me automatically, I had to click on the play button. That kid is awesome!!!!!! |
?? If he said "thanks for the compliment Americadude", shouldn't that offend me back? He's a man, he's from china, he's a "chinaman". I can't even make the racist connection to that one. Doesn't really seem derogatory, but then I'm not a chinaman. Anywho, he's a good guitarist. Kind of late-80's-esque, but I'm not begrudging him his fun. Certainly better at it than me. I suspect he hasn't left that bedroom since age 12 tho, which explains his dexterity. |
He is taiwanese.
Thing with asian culture, is that you have one hobby, and just one hobby. Here in the states people go ski-ing, skydiving, have a collection of guns, motorcycles and hot rods. People are completely devoted to their hobbies, like how they used to be completely devoted to their corporations as if they were samurai for their corporate lords.... When japanese companies started laying people off in the 90s it was a huge cultural shock, and even now their society is messed up with young kids going buck wild because there is not the same "cultural contract" of job security. |
Again. please
Anyone know who he is playing over? That person is the real talent, but even though he is playing over someone else, he is still good. Who was the band and guitarist he was playing over? I remember Scatterbrain doing some Mozart that sounded pretty good but am positive Scatterbrain isnt the band in the background. |
I'm not convinved the link in the first post isn't fake--I think he's "air guitaring" to someone else's licks.
Here's a favorite of mine (it's made the rounds but if you haven't seen it you should) www.ebaumsworld.com/marioguitar.html |
I think he's really playing it, or did and is re-syncing for the vid. I matched some of his fingerings just to see if he was ballpark and he's on the money as far as chords and placement. If you can fake it that good, you're better than the guy who did it, IMHO. |
Well he isn't faking it. You can hear some slop on some the faster stuff and watching his picking you can tell its him. Damn fine job if I say so myself. I give this kid 5 more years if he keeps it up and we may hear about him, if metal and talent ever come back. wolf |
Now you're getting me all teary-eyed. I haven't liked any new music since Nirvana fucked it all up. |
I doubt it. Now its all rapmetal with no solos or its folk music with distortion pedals, and no solos. |
I doubt it will come back to but just as an example any time
Malmsteen, vinnie moore, and now Stratovarius come to ATL their shows sell out in hours. So I still have "some hope". wolf |
It looks like he 's been watching Joe Satriani for awhile,
I'll bet he using a copy of a Stat telecaster with a Chorus pedal.... not saying he ain't good, but he's not special.. just alot in two penatonic scales. If you want to see some guitar talent, watch Rick Emmet from Triumph, and you can see alot of classical guitar influence.. or even the guitarest's from Tesla |
Malmsteen, Vai, & Satriani spring to mind! |
What is the original title and name of the composer of the piece he is playing?
That's Pachable's Cannon in D (I don't know how to properly spell it, sorry).
Pachelbel |
Cool, thanks for the link. I'm a classical AND like certain kinds of rock and this guy does it very tastefully.
"best" doesn't really apply to the guitar. There are virtuosos in many different styles. Some great guitarists: Eric Clapton Phil Keaggy Wes Montgomery Chet Atkins Segovia Stevie Ray Vaughan Mark Knopfler And there are tons of others.... |
It sounds to me like he used something like Garage band to layer some tracks of himself playing overtop of someone doing a simple rendition of Pachabel's canon. Tech available nowdays makes it really easy to record and mix your own stuff. |
Pretty good. He'd have been big in the 80's doing music for the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure soundtrack.
Don't think he has the "I'm suffering, this is sooo hard"
facial expression down quite right. Looked like he was having way too much fun. If he adds a pout, I'll give him an 8.6. |

I seriously think he's 'okay'. Pretty good even. But the problem is that he's playing along to a multi-tracked sequencer/sampler/recorder.
There's no way to tell how much of what you are hearing is actually something that was recorded in very slow speed and the sped up once in the sequencer/sampler. I wouldn't dare call him stellar. Here's someone I consider to be one of the greatest guitarists in the world today -- Eric Loy. Most of Eric's stuff is recorded live. He's a bonafide monster who puts guys like Fripp to complete shame. MP3 clips from his site... www.ericloy.com/sounds/catapult/mp3/TornTether.mp3 |
You ought to see Phil Keaggy perform live. He uses some sort of computer to play all the various parts of the song and loops them (even the drum parts) playing them back and playing over the top of them. You literally watch him build the song right in front of your eyes. It is amazing. |
Agreed, there's thousands of guys flailing away in their bedrooms who can do the same stuff just as well.
I'm sure fripp would disagree about being "put to shame". |
I've seen Keaggy play a bunch of times. Eric plays with him sometimes and he even came to hang out at the store where Eric and I taught lessons many moons ago. You're right, Keaggy is indeed one of the great masters.
