Anybody know of an automatic file renaming application?

Situation is this:

Different photos taken by different people with different cameras all with different file numbering systems.  The web application that puts the photos on the server puts them in via file name as opposed to file date.

What we'd like to do is get an application that would automatically rename all the photo files in chronological order so we can put them on the server.

Who knows what I'm talking about and can help?

Thanks,

Merlin

1) Open Explorer
2) Sort files by date
3) Control+A (Select All) files
4) Rightclick the first file in the list (while they are ALL highlighted)
5) Rename the file to 'WHATEVER.jpg'

This will rename them all to 'WHATEVER(1).jpg' 'WHATEVER(2).jpg' and so forth, in 'date modified' order.

You want to use the datestamp of the file and rename it using this information?

You want to run this against the existing files? meaning, it doesnt have to be as they are copied, correct? you can place the files then run this utility and that would suffice?

The only problem with that is, you're left with having parenthesis in the file name, which isn't well suited to uploading to all web servers.

When I got to this step, it deselected all the files except the first one and changed only that one file.    It did this whether I used Windows Explorer or accessed the files via "My Computer" or the shortcut.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Not sure. You are moving the mouse pointer over the first filename in the list and right-clicking once? Works for me on Win XP Pro.
