I had a friend named Trent E. I met a LEO tech class back around 1998-99. At that time he was a federal agent with Australia's version of the DEA. He had come halfway around the world to take some specialized tech classes in the US
He told me the government had come to his door and taken the shotgun his grandfather gave him leaving his home defenseless HE's a FUCKING COP FOR GOD'S SAKE When he went to work, he went unarmed. When he came home from work, he came home unarmed If he needed a weapon, he always had at least one other officer with him, usually more. They all went to the armory and checked out weapons and ammo. At the end of the assignment, they went back to the armory and checked the weapons and ammo back in. They had to account for every round expended. that was back in the 90's |

The U.S., Czech Republic, some South American countries, and a few others are exceptions, not the rule. ETA: Heck, some LE here don't take them home. I remember during the Katrina aftermath we had a dozen NYPD folks assigned to my district. After the first shift with them three or four came to me (presumably they thought I was a supervisor or something since I was at the front desk---unbeknownst to them at that time, that was my home, my house having been destroyed,) and asked me where the gun lockers were. They were off shift and getting ready to head for their lodgings, and wanted to secure their sidearms. After some confusion got settled, it was explained to me that they never took their guns home, what with the danger to their kids and all. |
