Jormungand's recent thread got me thinking; there hasn't been too much discussion about the Chromebooks.
I love Win 7. I have tried to use the Win 8.1 desktop version AND surface pro version. I hate it. I have my "big" PC that I use for ripping CDs, playing L4D, etc. It is 5 years old, and other than putting a SSD in it, I haven't had to reinstall Win 7 since building it. It is fast enough. I needed a replacement laptop for the couch. I already had an android phone. Want to video chat? Use hangouts or skype. Want to save a funny picture? Rt click, save as, and it goes into your google drive. Want to ensure that all of the pictures you take with your phone are not lost if your phone is stolen? They backup to google +. Want to print something? Set up cloud print, and it prints out wherever you are logged into chrome. Want to review your voicemails? Use google voice, and read/listen to them wherever you log into google voice. Funny video on youtube? Add to "watch later", and put it on the home TV with chromecast. Search for directions on the chromebook? Walk out door, open google now, and the directions and navigation are preloaded into your phone. Pay for stuff with google wallet and NFC. Track purchases in gmail. Calendar sync; Fix it on your PC, alerts show up on phone. 12 free go go in-flight wireless uses included. And, if you hate it, wipe it and run ubuntu. I know a lot of the stuff mentioned here can be done with an android phone, and an installation of chrome on any PC. However, most folks trick themselves in to thinking, "I really need a powerful macbook so I can do CAD work while sitting on the couch." The Mac ends up being a $1200 facebook machine. For couch surfing, you really cant beat the asus. |
