A young person I know was chaptered out of the army for going awol. He regrets what he did and would like to go back in. Is this possible? ![]() |
| take a look at his discharge papers... there should be a reenlistment code at the bottom... as long as he doesn't have an RE-4, he can reenlist. If he has an RE-3 he can reenlist but will need a waiver. RE-1 is the best.... RE-4 is disqualified from reenlistment and no waiver is allowed... |

RE codes were made to be waved RE-4 - Individuals separated from last period of service with a nonwaiverable disqualification (refer to AR 601-280). Ineligible for enlistment except as provided for in paragraphs 2-7c and 2-7d. (See waiverable moral and administrative disqualifications.) Disqualilication is nonwaivable. See below for a complete list of RE codes. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/l/blcode3.htm An RE-4 is not the kiss of death, but it's close. What chapter of discharge did your friend get? Anything less than a general discharge is going to make getting back in difficult. I agree that the NG is probably the best bet because they have much more flexable standards for enlistment \ reenlistment. The military is so hard up for people right now that even the active Army and USAR have jumped their enlistment age to 39. |

RE codes mean different things from different branches. An RE-3 is a nightmare waiver that can take months to get approved. An RE-4 from the Army is, in fact, the kiss of death. Absolutely no waiver authorized. Reference AR 601-210, chapter 3-22, para. c, (1) This is for re-enlistment into the Active Army and Army reserves, I'm not sure about the Guard. |
