Are you willing to give your life for 100 perfect strangers?
How about 10 children, 2 years of age? So you know they arent evil... Yet. |
I did it for 23 years, 9 months, and 16 days ... and now I'm retired from the US Navy. Technically I'm in the fleet reserve until I'm age 51 ... another six years to go to full retirement.
What makes them so freakin' "perfect"? |
Thank you for your service but Im talking if some one made you have to make the choice. You had to die right than and their or 100 people you never met will be killed. Something you only had two options and no way to defend you and the 100 strangers. |
I voted yea but I'm not sure "willingly" is appropriate for me. I get paid to serve and protect and sometimes that means facing serious injury or death head on. I will fight until my last breath to avoid death, but I would not turn and run if death was inevitable.
Perfect as in the perfect stranger, some one who you have no knowledge of even their existence. |
In a freakish Twilight Zone scenario where 100 people are randomly selected to die across the planet instantly vs. me, sorry...the 100 people are going to die.
My friends and family love me, and I don't want to put them through the trauma. That, and I'd like to see how the rest of my life turns out. And that is a perfectly rational self-interested response. |
That's an easy question. No.
ETA: I served in the ARNG for nearly 12 years. If I'd ever had to go to war, it would have been in defense of the Constitution and my loved ones. |
Simply to do, the only reward is the saving 100 lifes you never knew. They could be the trash of society or it's innocent you have no choice its simply a random group of people. |
Thats too much of a blanketed statement.
A robber is considered a stranger... the ol woman packing .45 mowing down innoccent kitties is a stranger. Specifics man! |
As mentioned, i really can't say. Depends on the circumstances i guess.
Given the information you provided? No.
I'd lay down my life to protect someone being victimized by a tyrant or criminal. Even to save somebody from an accident or something. Anything involving a child, without a doubt. Just to save 100 random people...probably not. If nobody can clue me in on exactly what I'm saving them from or why, it must not be that important. Fuck 'em, they shoulda hired a better representative. |
I'm in the rescue business... It's my job. the trick is NOT getting killed for perfect strangers. ~Dg84 |
Im aware of this The point is you have two choices. You can live or 100 people who you have zero choice of who you will save will die. |
Would I throw my life away or walk into the guillotine?
Hell no. But would I risk my life to protect innocents? You bet. |
Nope,
but, I'm willing to kill for strangers and even kill strangers, or kill STRANGE strangers. Does this help? |
I'd say no and go Chuck Norris on their asses and rescue the 100 perfect strangers.
No.
Wait, let me think about that. No. That's why I'm not interested in being a cop anymore. |
The cash option was a joke, your dead. It doesnt do a lot of good |
I guess the answer would be yes, though I usually don't think of my job choices in that light. Volunteer firefighter and Citizen Soldier.
I said yes to the poll but then paged down and would change my vote to no given the "Twilight Zone" case you have outlined.
This is after serving for four years, been a body guard, security guard and going to Iraq for six months to rebuild the Baghdad city government. Just the case you have given is kind of silly. |
How? It's simply a question. Who knows you may be the host of some disease and your life may be needed to save countless people. I can think of a few ways something similar to having to give your life to a few strangers or saving your own life with out any other choices could happen. |
My answer, without more details, is no. What if the 100 were moslem terrorists?
I didn't see the "Not only No, but HELL NO" option in the poll....
Family and friends? Without a second thought. The guy up the street that plays that fucking Ranchero music at 0200? Not. A. Fucking. Chance. |
I've shot people before to save someone, I was arrested and sued. they dropped all charges and called it self defense of a third party, but they had a hard on for me even when it was cleeeeaaaar cuuut that I was the good guy. State farm folded when the lawsuite came, even tho the judge said it wasn't my fault. Oh the reason I was sued is he came to my house to stab my buddy and me, so he sued my home owners insurance. I won't go thru that shit again and I'll always pop the perp in the head for a sure kill from now on, flame me all you want but dead people can't sue. |
perfect strangers who are all adult? hell no
perfect strangers who happen to be children? I would like to think I would do so, but thats one of those things few people ever learn the answer too |
Lets see, I face certain death to save the lives of 100 random strangers scattered throughout the planet? Is this what you call a dilemma? Try again.
Why is it considered more "noble" to die while saving children vs saving adults? Adults have valuable knowledge and experience. Children have none and may grow up to be low-lifes, or worse. What makes a child's life more valuable than an adult's? This is something that I've wondered about for a long time. |
Let them die... People suck... |
Just one of those things in life that just "is". As to the senario.... no. Not as described. There are situations where I would, I won't just make the blanket statement yes. |
8 years as a cop, 10 years as a volunteer firefighter....Hell yes. I've put my ass on the line for years and all of them were strangers. What a shitty world if no one would
So there's 100 people that will die, or the badguy will kill me, right?
How do I know the badguy won't kill the 100 people after he kills me? I would rather kill the badguy, save the lives of those 100 people and go home safe. On the other hand... if you're talking about GOD giving me the decision between having those 100 people die, or I sacrifice my life to save those 100 lives and I am going to Heaven for my sacrifice - the choice is too easy. |
I put my ass on the line for more tha 100 people every day..
For 300 million arguably... |
