A pic of the Global Hawk UAV that returned from the war zone on Monday under its own power. (Iraq to Edwards AFB in CA) - Not transported via C5 or C17..... Notice the mission paintings on the fuselage. It's actually over 250 missions.... (and I would suppose 25 air medals).
That's a long way for a remotely-piloted aircraft. Think of the technology (and the required quality of the data link to fly it remotely). Not only that but the pilot controlled it from a nice warm control panel at Edwards AFB.

Amazing, but there is a difference in loitering at 30K feet taking pictures and flying close air support while taking ground fire. |

Not yet, but one of these days they are gonna try it. I have NO idea if it will succeed or not (you can put all I know about this in a thimble and have room left over) but I am certain the techno guys will at least get their shot. Too many positives for the politicians not to at least try. Didn't Andy say before he left that GB has stated that the next fighter they adopt will be the last British manned fighter?

ya... that's TOTAL man-minutes of air combat. the air war will be over before the enemy knows it started. the raptor has taken all the fun and glamour out of it |

They are autonomous. The console operator talks to ATC and watches progress on a moving map while drinking coffee and eating a sandwich. There is no "flying" involved. |
