Appleseed is good stuff.  It was created by Masamune Shirow prior to Ghost in the Shell.  I also recommend getting the original mangas/comic books if you can still find them!

I saw the new one last fall. The story was good and the CGI of the mechs was awesome, but the character designs were horrid. The CGI made them look like claymation characters.

They should have taken a page from Last Exile; limited the CGI to the mechanical stuff and left the character designs as "traditional" animation.

Uh...that's exactly what they were going for.  The characters are CGI'ed to look like hand drawn animation. If they had left it as true hand drawn...well, you'd have that shitty Roger Rabbit thing going on where the characters stood out from everything else and would detract from the overall feel of everything else.  Plus, they did all the live-action motion capture, which I think really helped the fight scences and such.  Some of Dunane's moves were disturbingly lifelike.

Anyways, yeah, it's a good flick.  If you liked GitS and patlabor, you'll dig this.  I saw a re-released patlabor movie at Beast Butt the other day too.

Well Ill give it a pretty big +1

I think it is probably the best anime I have seen IMO , but yes the people looked a bit strange  all

the mechanical stuff looked great

and it had no stupid  convoluted spiritual/supernatural crap that alot of anime seems to have

just fighting with a enough plot to have a reason for the fighting
