My wife and I visited the lovely state of Vermont a few years ago. We stayed at the Middlebury Inn for a week and had a great time. Everyone we encountered was a conservative Republican (how did they ever allow that gay marriage law to get passed) and the guns laws are GREAT! We live in Northern NJ and would like to buy a piece of property in a rural area to use as a retreat and vacation home. We live fairly close (about an hour) to PA, but the prices for land there are considerably higher than in VT. (and VT is much more desolate) I can't really travel far in a vehicle due to some ongoing back problems, so we'd like to stick to Southern VT. I have a bunch of questions and wonder if anyone who lives in Vermont can answer 'em for us: What is the most conservative area of Vermont? Is it possible to set up an outdoor range (for occasional plinking) on your property? If so, aproximately how many acres would you really need to own to do this? Where is the VT Nuke Power plant located? (we want to be FAR from it ) Is there any area to avoid? Are there any good websites that show land for sale? (I think we'll probably end up buying the land first and throwing up a modular home after a while..) Any other thoughts? Thanks!!

Vermont is actually a VERY LIBERAL state. Although they do have no CC regs, the rest of their politics are liberal to socialist. In fact they have a socialist Sen or Gov;not sure which. Vermont is a beautiful state, but full of NYers, and NJites. If you want beauty and Conservatives, come to the land of "Live free or Die", (NH)

RBAD: I lived in VT from 82 to 96. Since I see no current residents jumping in to answer your questions, I'll give you two cents. Vermont is a beautiful place, the winters are long and hard and long. Did I say long? Southern VT is full of yuppie towns with hoards of NY & NJ rich transplants. Northern VT - well if you need work, bring it with you. Western VT, along the lake, is invaded in the summer by the rich yuppies from Quebec. VT's only congresscritter is a self-defined Socialist, Bernie Sanders. The two Senators are (Jeezum Jim) Jeffords, and (Granpa) Leahy. The dairy farmers are conservative, but overall the state is very very liberal. Expect high taxes. Regarding land - all I remember is that 10 acres is some sort of line in the sand, if you have that or more you can pretty much do what you want. Modular homes are not welcome in some areas. Good luck. DanM
